Conservatory Woes
Hello, First-Time poster here... So we bought our 2nd House. Moved in beginning of July. We have a beautiful extension on the back that houses the dining room/kitchen. The Dining room is brick and mortar built, but the kitchen is more of a lean-to conservatory structure (My guess is it was originally conservatory use but…

Problems with my roofer
Hi all, I have a single story kitchen extension that was built around 30 years ago. The roof was in need of some repair work and we decided to go all out and have all the tiles replaced and a skylight fitted at an estimated cost of £3800 (+ the cost of the skylight). I used a reputable roofer I have some prior experience…

Track Saw vs Regular Circular Saw with Guide?
Hi there. I tend to avoid a lot of woodwork as I only own a jigsaw (and so most of my prior projects have ended up with wonky cuts). I would like to change that and decided to buy a circular saw and then make a wooden guide (there are loads of videos/instructions on how to do this), so I would make perfectly straight cuts.…

Honeywell Lyric T6R or Nest Learning thermostat?
Hi, just looking for opinions on either of these. I'm having a new boiler installed and my plumber has recommended a wireless thermostat that uses OpenTherm. I am potentially looking to have the property as a residential or holiday let. I have spoken to Honeywell re: ease of switching the Lyric TR6 for use by each new…

Denied existence of guarantee
Hello forum. Got a tricky one, i found some live woodworms (furniture beetle) and called a provider who can treat such problems. There aren't many 'large' well-known brand contractors who do this sort of work, only a handful of big names. Anyway, the surveyor who called, I think has been to my property before (for the…

New Radiator but pipes wont fit
Hello...I hope someone can help me. We have hung a new double radiator, old radiator was single. Now the pipes are far apart. Let me try and attach a picture. Is there anything I can buy (extenders etc) to fix it. Ok no idea how to post a pic. The existing pipes are closer to the wall. And new radiator pipe is half a…

Opening up a fireplace
Hi, I have a fireplace in a second floor flat (converted Victorian building, other flats have the fireplace open) which is boarded up. I'd like to open it up; ideally to install a working electric fireplace, otherwise have it open just for decorative purposes. I took the vent off to take some photos and see what's inside…

Home security cameras and alarms
We have security cameras that can't be viewed online and a Banham alarm, but I'm wondering if there's a more modern solution to home security. If our alarm is triggered, it makes a noise and someone at Banham calls me to tell me the alarm has been activated. They can't tell me how or why, so the two times it has happened,…

Bosch Worcester Greenstar i30 boiler overheating water
Hi, Wonder if anyone had any experience with this. I've never been lucky with combi boilers, have found them unreliable junk in all the houses I've lived in. When the last one was written off, I decided to try my hand at a bosch Worcester, thinking it might be a bit better. After 18 months though, it's started to flick on…

Builder forgot to insulate loft
Hi I was just after some advice my builders (term used loosely) forgot to insulate the loft space! And when I challenged them about it the admitted it, so they then cut a whole in the newly plastered roof and insulated it correctly! My question now is they want to charge me for a bespoke loft hatch as they can’t buy one…

Looking for some advice. Converting integral garage to room and builder removing existing concrete floor to replace with new insulated floor - crushed hardcore then 100mm concrete, membrane then 100mm celotex. Question is what next? Liquid screed is suggested but am a bit concerned about drying times. 100mm of concrete…

Ikea Pax wardrobes - fix to wall with Billy-style L-bracket?
Really stupid question alert... Our Pax wardrobes will be sitting out from the wall as they'll be in front of a skirting board. We won't be able to use the supplied brackets/wall-fixings which go inside the wardrobe. Our Billy bookcases fix to the wall with L-brackets on the top of the units, which could be positioned over…

How much to remove a conservatory base please?
We recently moved house into a property that has a conservatory on the back, and I hate it! It’s just a dumping ground for stuff, temperature is unpleasant, it makes the dining room dark and it takes up the best part of the garden so I want it down. Getting rid of the construction itself isn’t the problem, though. It’s the…

keyless with key backup system
Hi all - I have a YALE security system in my house that I proudly installed a few months back. I was looking at getting the wireless door lock https://www.yale.co.uk/en/yale/couk/products/smart-living/smart-door-locks/keyless-smart-door-lock/ However - the reviews are pretty brutal. One key point is that in the event that…

Cheap Oven Cabinet
In our kitchen we have a horrid gas fired range cooker we inherited with the house. The whole kitchen is pretty terrible, but our plans to renovate it involve some significant remodelling that we're not in a position to tackle right now. We really want to do something about the cooker sooner though. My plan is to buy the…
