Cheap Oven Cabinet

In our kitchen we have a horrid gas fired range cooker we inherited with the house.

The whole kitchen is pretty terrible, but our plans to renovate it involve some significant remodelling that we're not in a position to tackle right now.

We really want to do something about the cooker sooner though.

My plan is to buy the (Built in) oven and hob we were planning to get in the remodel now, and stick the oven in a carcass with a short section of new worktop bridging the gap and holding the hob.

Since this will hopefully only be a temporary arrangement, we don't want to spend too much on the worktop (I don't expect it to match the rest of the current kitchen). I can get a 3m length of basic laminate from Homebase for £40 but as the gap for the range is just 1m that seems a bit wasteful.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that sells shorter lengths of worktop? Off-cuts would probably do.
Can anyone suggest a better way of achieving what I want to achieve?

Have a look at the IKEA range of units - The modular range come with doors and worktop. For example

Thanks, unfortunately I only have a 101cm gap to work with so it won't fit. Worth bearing in mind when we do the kitchen proper.

I looked there, didn't see anything cheaper than Homebase.

There are a few random bits of worktop on ebay, most (all ?) require collection. An alternative is facebook/gumtree/freecycle either for an offcut or someone who is removing an old kitchen - Might even be worth contacting a few local kitchen installers.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel option - I have a length of worktop (around 2m). Been kicking around in the garage, so is a bit icky. Free to a good home if you are prepared to collect.

Thanks, I'd forgoten about facebook, I've had good luck with local pickup type stuff from there before.
I'll bear your offer in mind, although the mrs would have to agree too. Where in the country are you?

Out near the Norfolk Broads. Not the most central of locations, but it is fairly quiet round here.

Your best bet is to either look for an off-cut that a timber merchant is selling off cheap, or look for a damaged worktop from a retailer that's been marked down to sell through.
