Installing a gas cooker.
Hi I am wondering if someone can clarify something for me. We have been given a range cooker all in perfect working order. My dad is a retired CORGI (now Gas safe) registered engineer. He is happy to install this for us (it has the simple bayonet fitting) Reading online it seems confusing as to what exactly the law is. I…

Teka DW7 56 FI Dishwasher
Hi, I have a Teka DW7 56 FI dishwasher, which is about 5 years old. Yesterday, I put the dishwasher on for a full cycle, as normal, but a couple of hours later, I couldn’t hear any noise from it and so I returned to investigate whether it had finished. However, it seems that mid cycle, it has lost all power and when the…

We had an extension done about 11 years ago and have just found out that the boiler was wrongly installed on the boundary wall. the vent slightly overhangs into neighbour s property which is about 1metre away from their wall and the steam blows around near their door. The neighbours after all these years have decided to…

Help please from a plumber
My toilet once flushed doesn’t stop leaking in the bowl so I’m wasting water. Sometimes when I lift the lid then keep flushing the tank fills and then stops. I had to wake my husband at 2:30 this morning to ask for help but the tank eventually filled and it never seems to happen when he flushes. Please help, obviously I’m…

Disposal of paint cleaning mixture.
I've just been applying a special primer to a door. I cleaned the brush in white spirit as recommended then got the residue off with hot water and washing up liquid. None of it has gone down the sink - in any case I'm careful as I have a septic tank. But now I have a bucket containing a water/primer/white spirit solution…

Euro cylinder lock won't fit
I just moved in to a new house and am changing the locks. I changed most of them just fine but am having issues with the french doors at the back. The cylinder I removed looks exactly the same size as the new one. If I lay them down, end to end, they look identical. But the new one just won't fit in the door. The metal…

SLAM lock door - external handle
Hi - can anyone help, I've recently had a new front door fitted which has a 'slam lock' mechanism, which means the door automatically locks when the door is closed. To get in from the outside you ALWAYS need a key. This is working fine, but the external door handle is only used to pull the door shut, however the company…

Heating won't turn off!
Hi all please help, I have a combi boiler with a Siemens's controller and I pressed the boost buttons this morning for hot water for an hour (I'd also pressed the heating by mistake) so I turned the heating one off but noticed my radiators were red hot half an hour later. I then turned the heating & hot water off manually…

Worcester combi boiler losing pressure quickly
Hello everybody, My Worcester combi boiler is losing pressure at a dramatically fast pace. I had multiple plumbers over and they changed several components of the boiler and tested it - they seem to agree that the boiler is fine and there might be a leak under the floor. We have tested the boiler by isolating the heating…

Prep or no prep for painting Zinsser directly onto skirting boards?
I'm completely new to the world of DIY. My new skirting boards already looked primed ([photos](https://imgur.com/a/RO5Sv5u)) so I was wondering whether it's okay to put a coat or two of Zinsser's Perma-White Interior Satin Paint directly onto them or should I sand/prepare them somehow first?

Nail / Screw bulges in dry wall - major issue?
I promised myself I wouldn't post another subsidence based post, because I'm a bit obsessed with the topic at the moment. I suffer from anxiety and OCD so I keep thinking about the damn thing. But anyway....... After being in our new house for 3 months - 15 year old, timber frame new build - I have noticed quite a few nail…

Salvage wooden conservatory or replace it?
The house we moved into a few months ago has a wooden lean-to conservatory (glass roof and one glass wall), built around 15 years ago. It's not in the best shape. Some of the wood on the wall is soft/rotted, though as far as I can tell it's mainly in the French doors, the beading around the windows, and in places like…

Redoing damaged floor - what thickness insulation to buy??
We recently had to take up our living room floor after damage from a leak - it turned out to have loads of layers (thick wooden boards over plywood over plasterboard over insulation over chipboard), I am currently trying to get the materials back together for relaying everything above the chipboard but I don't really know…

Fence between halves of a shared driveway
My neighbor and I each have single family homes with our own detached garage. There is a shared double driveway going the between our houses with a detached garage for each of us at the end. The property line goes down the middle of the driveway, so we each own half of the driveway. I have been wanting to put up a fence…

Building control and load bearing walls
Hi, A house we are considering buying has created a new doorway in an internal wall. The wall is probably (almost certainly) load bearing. Assuming it is load bearing, would this require building control or is it only complete wall removal that requires building control sign off?

Wiring a 32A hottub
We've acquired a hottub and need to run a 32 amp cable to it. Please has anyone done this and if so can we have some advice please? Our fuse box is a fair distance from the site and would probably mean taking the cable around the house as we have solid floors. Is it possible to use a spur from the kitchen hob which I am…
