Local councils confidentilality when dealing with a complaint.
So recently a neighbor decided to build a raised platform in his garden, as he's down slope form me, he can now look over a 2 meter fence into my living room. Kind of ridiculous really, he had a nice tree giving him privacy but had the tree removed and raised a platform in its place, about 5 feet from the ground. Now the…

Electric Radiators or Log Burner?
Hi, I moved in to my house last year and the heating is night storage which is rubbish and doesn't seem to work on boost so when I come home in the evening all the heat has gone. I thought I'd be able to fit gas central heating in due course but the configuration of my house makes this tricky without losing space (which I…

Builder Requsting Deposit 9 Months Before Work Starts
Hi, As the title suggests, we are planning on having an extension in August 2017. The work totals around £50k and the builder has requested a £7k deposit to keep the build spot free. I have no problem paying a deposit a few weeks before so materials etc can be purchased but £7k this far in advanced doesn't seem right to…

Leave Boiler On, Turn Off Stopcock?
I have a solid fuel coal boiler, usual set up, tank in loft to fill hot water tank etc. Going away for a couple of days, the boiler (coal) will stay lit for that period, just wandering as a precaution to turn off the stopcock. Will this effect the boiler?

Simple app for scale drawings
I have a sketch with sizes on that I need to turn in to a scale drawing on (garden cabin / glorified shed with a couple of dormers stuck on the front to create space in the roof!). I've never used CAD before so can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sewer manhole
From the above sketch has any one any idea If it is possible to move the sewer manhole or a work around that is expectable to both the water company and building control as we are thinking about building an extension and don't want it in side the extension.

Site plan drawing question
We are having a garden cabin built (a glorified shed with some storage in the eves) but because its more than 2.5 meters and its going against our fence we need planning permission. I am lothed to spend almost £1000 on someone to do the drawings for planning permission for us so I am gong to give it a go myself. The…

Problems with Megaman LEDs and apparent ignoring of issue
Apologies for a somewhat long post. Any advice much appreciated. We rebuilt our house about 2 years ago and installed 60 x Megaman GU10 7w lamps that we purchased through Eyre and Elliston in Welwyn Garden City. We outfitted to a very high spec and paid a lighting design firm in Welwyn to specify the components and plan…

Loft Hatch Insulation - DIY
I've got a hatch that hangs down so a ladder can be pulled down, all there is a wood panel so a large amount of heat escapes although rest of the loft is properly insulated. Any thoughts on how I can easily address this with some DIY?

Building an extension over a drain?
Evening all We're hoping to extend our 1930s semi by adding a kitchen/diner to the rear. The trouble is this involves building over a sewage inspection manhole. Having looked down it, it has a branch for our soil pipe (which will be moved if we extend) and appears to also take the neighbour's waste. She flushed her toilet…

Thermostat change
Hello all, I've just completed on my first home. I have a Ideal Independent C24 combi boiler. There's a room thermostat but it's just temperature. I'd like to swap for a 5+2/7 day timer so I can save having heating on at 6am at the weekend! I assume this is possible? Do I need to do anything to the boiler, IR just swap the…

Replacing storage heaters
I need to change my heating from old storage heaters that give heat during the day and are cold by late evening. I want to be able to set a timer for whatever temperature I want at different times of the day/week, so just a minimum during the day and good in the evenings. Can anybody please advise what types/brands may be…

Fitting liquid dispensers on tiled walls
I have just had a new bathroom fitted and am very happy with the end result. I have now decided that I would like three wall-mounted liquid dispensers fitted, one near the wash basin and two in the shower area. These areas are tiled. I know that the local independent bathroom fitters I used are too busy with other orders…

Building warrants - is it really that pricey?
We've been thinking about doing some work in our flat - basically knocking through a plasterboard wall and a small brick wall (about 70cm wide) which is most likely supporting. I've been in touch with a structural engineer and they said the fee to do the required survey would be £450-550. I would then also need to pay…

Building a Large Shelf
I want to create something like this: The measurements we're looking at are: 310cm long 30.5cm wide Thickness doesn't matter too much, probably a couple of centimetres. Wood type doesn't really matter, MDF, pine, anything on the cheaper side as I know costs could sky rocket. I've called up some local timber yards who…

Best place to sell retro/vintage furniture/books etc?
Hi all A friend of ours has just bought a house from the family of an old lady who recently died. The house was sold as seen, meaning that the buyer must empty the house and get rid of all the old contents. Now these contents contain some really old stuff but they wouldn't exactly qualify as antiques. I have seen some of…

part tiled bathroom meets new pvc clad ceiling.
hi guys, i am wanting to fit cladding to my daughters bathroom ceiling, but I have a problem. I fitted my own fully tiled rectangular ceiling with no problems, but when looking at hers, she is wanting to tile the bath area on the back wall fully, with both ends to about 4 foot along the wall. When I come to fit the coving…
