Depending how many camera's you are looking for something like this would be a good setup.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/lorex-8-channel-1tb-720p-cctv-kit-with-4-cameras-a32un

4 cameras @ 720p with decent night shots, smart phone accessible, decent sized hdd etc.

  • Don't forget to make sure you're aware of the rules regarding data protection if you're installing CCTV if they are going to be pointing anywhere off your property (even if its just capturing the pavement in front of your house, for instance).

We have two neighbours with extensive CCTV which covers the road and pavement and our drives and gardens too. I don't mind because unless someone pointed the cameras out you'd never notice them. The neighbours have both showed me the feed from the cameras too. So, how does Data protection apply here? Is it for other people?

If I were buying CCTV right now I would definitely get an AHD system. The quality of those high def cameras blows everything else out the water.
I definitely wouldn't buy anything with IP cameras, they are just trouble.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

If their cameras are pointing at anything other than their own property then they aren't covered by the DPA exemption for home CCTV use and need to register as a data controller and conform with all the rules of the DPA.

  • If you have an internet connection these standalone IP cameras are quite good ..

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Foscam-FI9821W-Megapixel-Camera-Black-1/dp/B01GV8GDZU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1481146783&sr=8-2&keywords=foscam+fi9821w

I bought 2 of these to keep an eye on my UK & Spanish property. Easy setup, Decent picture quality, Pan & tilt, IR cut out (a must have!), two way audio (crappy but works), also motion detection with email notification and picture/video upload to both cloud & sd card.

They've been working great for the last couple of years and a lot better than the cheap Chinese clones.

    However, if you're on a budget....https://www.amazon.co.uk/FLOUREON-SP012-Megapixel-Wireless-Detection/dp/B01EMWTIBI/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1481147755&sr=1-12&keywords=sricam
These work OK....Picture quality not as good and no IR cut. However very easy to setup and work OK to a smart phone.

  • I binned my old Maplin and Chinese ones this time last year for Hikvision. I bought 1 x 2.8mm IP dome camera 2532 (records sound), a 7604 NVR and a 3TB hard drive for recording. I think that came to about £280 or something like that. Simple to view on a laptop, pc, tablet or smart phone.

It's easy to set up and only needed a Cat 6 cable to the camera to the NVR as a power over ethernet connection, meaning no additional power cord and just the cat 6 cable. The NVR needed power cord and a direct connection to the modem/router and in my case a BT homehub 5.

I did have intentions of adding another 3 cameras but the quality on this is very good to the old stuff and I'll be adding one more which will be to the rear of the property.

The only downside of this set up is the price. Since I bought mine Hikvision have told dealers to up the prices. I'd have to pay an additional £120 more for the same camera and nvr today. You can buy the Chinese versions on some auction websites but if there's a problem the UK dealers/support won't want to know.

I've set mine up to only record when something comes into the zones I've asked it to= motion detection. So far I've got 1614GB free space left out of 3TB and that's since January this year.

The picture is awesome during the day but I did need to install another light for night time as it was a bit etchy at best before the other light went up.
