Changing from oil to gas - which combi boiler / microbore pipes
We're changing our heating system from oil to gas and will be installing a Worcester Bosch combi boiler in the kitchen. We'll take away a kitchen cupboard to get the boiler installed but, in a couple of years time, we want to get a new kitchen and have the boiler housed within a cupboard. It's a 3 bedroom house with 1…

Fitting CCTV cameras on my property
Hi folks There has been a spate of robberies in my area and I have been thinking of fitting CCTV cameras (or similar) around my property, to prevent any possible break-ins. Could someone by kind enough to advice what type of camera I could fit, which is reasonable riced and easy to fit? Thank you.

Straightening sockets
Some of the double sockets in our house are a bit wonky. Some are barely noticeable but others are much more obvious. Would it be a case of adjusting the faceplate or does the backbox also need fiddling around with?

Double sockets to USB doubles
I got some double sockets recently with USB plugs in them...I tried fitting a couple at the weekend but the backs on them are deeper than the old style, and so dont sit flush on the wall! What can I do ? Would I have to change the back plate, is that a big job? All solid masonry walls :(

Options for second bathroom
I'm having an extension built which includes a new bathroom. We have a combi boilers and a combiforce shower which works well with the current setup. Builder is suggesting I go with an electric shower in the extension. I'm not keen as I belive them to be a poor compromise. What are my options? 1. Electric shower. Pros.…

Unhappy with Plastering after Electrics
Posted this in the wrong forum, ooops! Let's try here... Basically, we bought a property, got the keys on the 1st of November. We knew there would be a full electrical rewire required. We've had the rewire, they finished Friday, but the problem is that while the electrics are bang on, the plastering to repair chases etc…

What were old (1930s) timber floors made out of?
Don't say wood. :) I'm curious what type wood. Short of taking the pieces to someone who knows what they're talking about (& finding someone would be a start) i thought i'd just chance it on here. I ask because this is the first real time we've been able to get our fire going after having it installed at the back end of…

Blocked drain
Our kitchen waste drains into a drain which seems to be permanently blocked - but not quite, as it never overflows. The water sits above the level of the grating, about 4 inches below the level of the driveway. It never drains away. It smells. OH and I spent yesterday morning clearing it. We scooped out most of the water…

Bathroom extractor fan help
The extractor fan in my bathroom suddenly just stopped working one day. I wasn't overly concerned so just left it as I had other things going on that were a bigger priority. I ended up forgetting about it for a few months when it started working again (sort of) but made a crackling sound followed by a bang and a sulphar…

Exchange Danfoss timer
Hi After a bit of research and building myself up to it, I've bought a second hand Danfoss 102e5 and replaced my rotary Danfoss 103. (I'm very skint so buying a new one or getting a man in would be off my scale). All seems well and I'm very happy. The exchange was fairly straightforward, just fiddly, though I did need to…

Insulating a wall
Hi, My home has a cavity wall but was deemed not suitable for CWI as the cavity has too much rubble inside. 2 of our rooms are particularly cold as they are on the end of the house and have outside walls on 3 sides and windows on 2. One is the living room and manageable, the other is a large bedroom. I am trying to…

Wall cracks - reassure or advise me!
Wall cracks have got worse over the last year. At the time we were advised the walls were drying out, and that's what caused the cracks. But they've definitely grown and I'm not sure whether that's normal. The wall is a one side of a ground floor bay window. There has been damp in that wall and it's clearly been patched.…

Plank to span stairwell
Hi all. I want to hang a painting on the side wall of a stairwell. I can't reach over from the upstairs landing without fear of overbalancing and falling so I'm needing a plank of some sort I can walk along. I'll run this from the top step to the opposite side of the landing. What sort of thickness plank should I looking…

Been sent a bill by plumber but no work was done-would I still have to pay??!!

Quote. They emailed me a quote outlining the price and exactly what the price involved. What it involved was fitting a rad, fitting pipe work from an existing radiator…

Replacing electric oven
All, Our existing oven has stopped completely now. We thought it was an element so replaced that but alas that did not resolve. So we are looking at replacing. Question is we live in an 8 year old house, nice new (ish) electrics. Do we have to pay £90 (the Currys cost) for the cooker to be installed and wired in? Looking…

Lights and ceiling
We have knocked down the wall between our kitchen and dining room. The ceiling will need replastering, and we also want to replace the two current ghastly lights (including one of those 1980s fluorescent tubes) with LED spotlights in the ceiling. Daft question, but do I get the lighting done first then ceiling skimmed, or…

In my new home, sockets are spaced out in living room extensions best idea?
In my current property I have all the electrical things in living room in one corner, tv for watching everyday things, computer and monitor, and a big tv (though can attach it to wall don't have skills) for hd things that gets little use. Having so much in a small area means right now I am using like 14 plugs via 1 x 4 way…

Having gas cooker hob in kitchen?
I'm now planning having a new kitchen in the house. I'm going to have an integral cooker. I would like to have a gas cooker hob. The house is connected to mains gas - but there is no gas in the kitchen (it's gas central heating and a gas sitting room fire). I'm wondering whether it is actually possible to connect gas to…
