Double sockets to USB doubles

I got some double sockets recently with USB plugs in them...I tried fitting a couple at the weekend but the backs on them are deeper than the old style, and so dont sit flush on the wall!

What can I do ?

Would I have to change the back plate, is that a big job? All solid masonry walls :(

Comments

  • The ones I bought (BG from Toolstation) came with spacers.

If you can't get some matching spacers then yes, the back box will need to be replaced with a deeper one.

Personally, I would pack them up and take them back. USB sockets constantly draw power. Not much, granted but like leaving your tv on standaby.

Do they not only draw power when something is connected to them ?

Probably more equivalent to a socket with a red neon light. The power draw is negligible.

As above, mine came with spacers, but actually fitted in a 25mm back box (tight fit though). Spacers are a couple of quid on ebay if they're not returnable.

    Mine were these - http://cpc.farnell.com/bg-electrical/822u/socket-2-gang-13a-with-2x-usb/dp/PL15033
  • just out of interest with these sockets with built in usb's.
i believe my iphone comes with a 5amp charging plug and my ipad comes with a 10amp charging plug, if using these sockets will my ipad charge slower or my iphone charge quicker?

    many thanks.

The sockets output rate will be your MAX charge rate.

If the socket has 2 sockets with a shared 1A output thats all you will get.

They can be a bit rubbish also. I prefer a standard plug in charger. As least you wont need a brand new socket when the USB section craps out.

when buying USB sockets to replace existing wherever possible check they will fit in a standard 25mm deep back box, that way they are fairly easy to swap.

They usually have a 1.2 and 2.4amp USB power outlet, Apple use the 2.4A

If you are in a modern home the wall behind may be grey block, really easy to cut out deeper, you can use the same back box and set it back with longer screws if you want. Metal backboxes are under £1.

Hollow wall would be even easier, the boxes are deep enough anyway. The spacers do look a bit unsightly but for the added convenience I'd still be tempted.
