How to change a lightbulb
How many of us does it take to change a lightbulb? This is my recessed bathroom spotlight and I have no idea how to get the bulb out. This is about as far as I can pull it from the ceiling. Any ideas?

Builder quote, is this odd?
Hi I emailed a builder for a very small project mid last week, they replied and then I asked a follow up question. I was busy late last week and over the weekend. Turns out they have emailed me 5 times (without me replying) asking for an appointment to come around. They have a few good reviews on yell, but it seems a bit…

Tree Pres. order..advice.
Hi...our neighbour across a small river which separates our houses has approached me Re. our mature trees . He is concerned that, if they fall, they will damage his property, (they were there when he moved in 4 yrs ago...they are 50+ yrs old). He is seeking permission to reduce the height of these. I am sympathetic to his…

Dampcourse or not?
Hi, hope I have posted this in the right place. Basically we have lived in our house for 12 years now, it is a midterrace and it's in a damp area (near the coast and many years ago did flood). Downstairs over the years the plaster on the walls is crumbling off in lots of places with salting on others. I desperately want…

Ill Fitting Door
Hi there, after some advice about an ill fitting stable door please :) Basically the top door doesn't fit well against the door frame - there is about a 1.5cm gap at it's widest point, narrowing to no gap at all at the top of the door. It gets cold in the kitchen during Winter because of this, and you can see daylight…

Indian Stone Patio Sealer
Hi all, Just had a 15sm Indian Stone Patio installed - the builder recommended getting it sealed after about a month to make sure that it doesn't get too attacked by our lovely British weather. Been doing some research online and found this - does anyone have any recommendations or experience of doing it?

Conservatory roof replacement materials
Hello! I have a friend who's wanting to have her conservatory roof replaced. She currently has polycarbonate panels, and the whole thing is around 15 years old. One place only quoted her for a full tiled roof, but I understand that weight can be an issue, and she doesn't want it any darker inside than it already is. She's…

Medium sized bathroom work. Cheapest option.
Hello everyone, We have a large bathroom with a walk in shower in one corner but no bath. We want to have a bathtub installed and we have three options where we can put the bath. I'd love to know which option would be cheapest or best in any other way. 1. Bath plus new, smaller, shower cubicle on the back wall (bath…

Loft conversion with basics
Hi all, I have come across several posts about Loft conversion but most of them seem to pretty old, so I just thought of writing here to learn about the current market. I have a 3 bed end-terrace house and I would like to convert the loft into a home theater. So I would like to stick to the basics. So please can you give…

Leaking shower - what kind of tradesman do I need?
Hi all, My en suite shower is leaking. When I moved in, water was dropping off the hose and trickling down into the main shower bit and down the plug hole. I bought a new hose with new washers thinking it would fix the problem but it hasn't - when I unscrewed the old hose and took it off, the bit (connector, valve!? No…

DIY Driveway - reusing rubble?
Please be gentle - I've no DIY experience whatsoever, but I'm in the process of converting our front lawn into a gravel driveway. Nothing fancy, just somewhere to get the car off the road. So far I've lifted the lawn and am now in the process of tackling the hefty tree roots underneath. After that I'll put in a hardcore…

refixing decorative stones
My house has ugly decorative stones at the edges with pebbledash on the rest of the walls. Several decorative stones have falled off. They had been refixed back in with something, you can see the more recent stuff. But lots are falling off now. I've decided to just fix them to the wall with some kind of pin or screw. The…

Mysterious leak
Hello All, I would really appreciate your input. We have a damp patch, with mold on the wall adjacent to the bathroom. The boiler is also very close. So is a radiator. Water started coming down through the kitchen ceiling, but this stopped and only lasted a few days - the pressure on the boiler was high at this time too so…

Double Glazing Experts..
I've had timber double glazed sashes installed but the dg units are upside down - company name upside down and printed spacer bar on bottom. As it's writing, rather than a random logo, it's really obvious they're upside down. They're toughened so they may well be wrong way round, too, as I understand the toughened pane…

Why coach bolts, and where to get alternatives?
I want to get some new bolts for a picnic table I just acquired - the old ones are a bit rusty. A few of them were a pain to get out: they're coach bolts, and the wood at the edges was obviously a bit soft, so they just span in the slot. As a result, I'm wondering why coach bolts seem to be used for these types of…

Glossing
Not very Diy minded, I decided to gloss the skirting today. I haven't finished and started in the afternoon. Dam it's a long and tedious and laborious task. The doors aren't Matt, I guess they are between gloss and semi gloss. Don't have an electric sander and it would have taken me weeks with a sheet of sandpaper, so…
