Fireplace size
Sorry if this sounds silly but my house has a fireplace that has been converted to use a gas fire. The last owner said that the gas fire was condemned during a service and they have removed the fire and capped the gas pipe. I have been looking for a gas fire to fill the hole but can't find anything the same size. The…

Conservatory advice- local or national firm?
We are moving house and will be needing a conservatory/orangery type construction. We have spent the afternoon trying to look at consevatory outlets to get an idea of what kind of things we like... however it's proven fruitless- majority seem to be closed or impossible to find! I'm wondering what is recommended- do we go…

Neighbor backed into brick wall breaking it
Hi, I'm in need of some advice as I don't know how to proceed in this situation as we've never had a neighbor cause damage to our property and obviously I want to keep this amicable as this has been our neighbor since I was born. I came home to find like 1/4 of my wall hanging out onto the pavement at an angle. I thought…

Fire cement / fire silicone?
I think it's one of these that we need for this part of the fire, right? Where it's cracked. Just to touch it up. Would you use one over the other (& why)? I'd guess probably fire cement is best of the two? At any rate is there a brand out there that is known as being better (or worse) than the rest? Excuse the dust :)

Finding a reputable tradesperson
Hi, How do you go about finding reputable, trustworthy and value for money tradespeople e.g. plumbers, electricians, general builders, plasterers etc. I appreciate word of mouth is one way, but when you're new to an area and don't really know anyone, how else would you go about your search? Thanks!

TV cabling to 2nd bedroom
We have a main TV cable socket in the living room but none anywhere else in the property. What can I do to get another main cable socket into our bedroom at the other end of the property? Ideally I dont want cables running down the length of internal walls etc., and have already hidden existing cabling under the skirting,…

Is this the best approach for our damp kitchen?
Hello We are currently having our kitchen renovated. We knew there was some damp but thought it was a combination of a leaky roof and condensation. The house is a mid terraced victorian, about 1900 with a typical through lounge and dining room and then what was the old kitchen behind, which at some point has either had an…

Building Regulations
I have viewed a recently renovated property with my daughter and noticed that an internal wall on the ground floor has been removed to create an open plan lounge. The removed wall is at right angles to the ceiling joists which run front to back and there is a stud partion wall for a bedroom directly above.A RSJ has been…

Washing machine repair
Washing machine went bang, distinct smell of burn. Same smell as capacitor when it blows. Looked at service manuals and it lists an interference capacitor, to me it sounds just a motor run capacitor. So question is could a motor run capacitor be used in place of the interference capacitor. I would replace like for like,…

App controlled electric heater
I wonder if anyone knows if there is a single electric heater which I could use in the cabin but control from the house (in preparation for going heating prior to use in winter). My Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work reasonably well out there, e.g. using my phone to play music through a speaker. Not sure if this will be the best…

Garden Room
Hi, We're looking to add a garden room to the bottom of our garden. But I'm trying to work out if it's permitted development or not. To my simple reading it is permitted development. It will be less than 2.5m in height. It will cover way less than 50% of the land area. It won't have any plumbing installed. It will be used…

Double / Single pole switched sockets
I need to fit a replacement double socket (the contacts in the earth pin have "closed up" - making it hard to push a plug in) - and, since we use this socket for charging android devices - I thought that I would get a socket with built in USB charger points... I see that they are available, either single pole or double…

Instant Boiling Water Tap
Have just finished a large extension and have fitted a Howdens kitchen. Just looking at all the fittings now and thinking of a Boiling Water Tap, to keep the uncluttered look within the kitchen. Does anyone use one and would you recommend them? Also what tap would you go for as they seem to range greatly in price. Regards
