Re-skim or can i paint over

Hi Guys,

I would be grateful if you could give me an opinion on these walls? Do they require a reskim or am i able to do anything else with them to get a smooth finish and to paint over.

You might not need a full skim if you can fill in any hollows and sand down, then consider lining paper.

Having just done all that though, I'd be inclined to reskim. It's a lot less work, gets done a lot faster, and will give a much better result.

Contract obliterating emulsion like Leyland Covermatt contains a lot of filler. It is designed and formulated to level up plaster. I would give a product such as this a try - you will need a couple of coats but I cannot quantify how deep your marks are.

A cheaper alternative is contract matt - more widely available but still with good covering ability. You may need an additional coat of this - only you will be able to judge.

The bottom line is trying this route will be cheaper than taking on a plasterer. Also quicker, since most are very busy and you are in the middle of the holiday season making labour availability even worse.

Have you recently removed wallpaper from this wall? On second photo especially it looks like there are still lots of bits of the wallpaper backing there. If so, these should scrape off easily if Then sand and use thick lining paper, or anaglypta and then emulsion.

Don't sand that wall, it will end in tears and you will defiantly need a plasterer if you do

When I bought my house, poor as a church mouse, I had similar walls.

No way could I afford a plasterer, I couldn't afford much food at the time!

So, I bought wallpaper with a slightly raised pattern on it, and painted over it. Subtle pattern I might add, like thin stripes. Worked out great, you would never know it was wallpaper unless you have binoculars.

29 years later it is still great. Changed the colour a few times though!

I credit a friend of my brother's who did a brilliant job hanging the paper in the first place. And I'm sure he filled a few cracks too while he was at it.

No one believes me when I tell them it's papered and painted. But it is!
  • Thanks for your advice guys.

There was indeed some paper left on the wall (cleared it up now).

As Furts says apply a couple of coats of that stuff or similar, will probably be better and cheaper than a skim that may not even "take"
