Why coach bolts, and where to get alternatives?

I want to get some new bolts for a picnic table I just acquired - the old ones are a bit rusty. A few of them were a pain to get out: they're coach bolts, and the wood at the edges was obviously a bit soft, so they just span in the slot.

As a result, I'm wondering why coach bolts seem to be used for these types of fastenings? These arent bolts on the table surface, so its not to keep that smooth and functional; nor are they visible, so its not aesthetics.

I wanted to replace them with something that I can get a tool onto both ends, but I only seem to be able to find coach bolts in the right size, not regular hex bolts..
They seem to be M6 bolts, one is 100mm, and the other 120mm. I can't seem to find anything long enough in Wickes, Screwfix or B&Q.

if you have a toolstation near, their coach bolts are about the tenth of the price of B&Q's.

Coach bolts are used for 1 reason only, once they bite, the square under the head means you just need a spanner on the nut, not another one on the head.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I thought that might be all. Thats great, right up until the bolt is corroded tighter than its grip on the wood, and the whole thing just spins... like most of these.
I'll pop over to fastpack tomorrow like a poster above suggested.

Screwfix/toolstation also sell threaded bar which you can cut to whatever length you want.
    Also consider tee-nuts.

Try looking for roofing bolts instead of coach bolts.

Thats exactly what I've ended up with; works a treat.

Thanks, went there today and now got the picnic table up. They also had the teak oil I wanted at a good price.

Fastpack tried to suggest that before I said I wasn't fussed about what the head was like, as long as I could get a tool onto it.
