Howdens quote - seems a lot?
Hi - and many thanks if you reply to this. I'm trying to buy a kitchen and it's a frustrating business... the quote I'm getting from Howdens seems very high for a Tewkesbury kitchen that doesn't include any appliances, worktop, sink or flooring. It comes to £6,368.51 + VAT (= £7642.21) for this list, even in their 'huge…

Builder charging for travel
I've just had some work done which has taken about 3 weeks. When I got the final invoice there was an item for "Sundries" at £200. I queried it and he said it was "just an allowance for travel expenses (fuel etc)". I've never paid a trade for travel expenses before and I think the majority wouldn't charge for them, unless…

Cheap sanding sheets for Jewson sander
Does anyone know which type of sanding sheets I need for a Jewson floor sander? http://www.jewson.co.uk/tool-hire/power-tools/sanders/products/5700/floor-sander/ We hired one before & I remember the sheets were quite expensive & we bought some elsewhere as we hired it for 2 weeks so had time to. This time we are hiring it…

Front door issues
Hello, I was just looking for some advice. Recently moved in to a new home, and noticed the front door doesn't shut with a tight seal. It looks like the bottom right hand side of the door (standing inside of the door) is being pushed out. It's only a matter of millimetres but enough for the heat to escape! The gap, again…

Wireless leds for under cabinets
I have been looking at putting some lighting under the cabinets in my kitchen but don't want to have wires trailing down to the sockets. Has anyone used the battery operated led spotlights? If so are they ok and how long do the batteries last? Thanks in anticipatrion x

Tiling Adhesive failure
Hi, Recently brought Unibond Tiling Adhesive from B&Q. To my horror during the tiling the bathroom tiles started falling from the walls reigning down on my new double bath. Im no tiling newbie and have done several jobs to satisfaction. However after inspection it is clear the tiling adhesive has totally failed. The…

Varnish, Paint or Stain?
I've ordered some plain pine bookshelves. They're not painted, just plain bare wood. I'm a bit confused about the difference between varnish, wood stain and paint. I don't want to darken them significantly, but they would match better with the other furniture if they looked a bit more 'finished'. Is it varnish I need? Any…

LED failure
I replaced 16 50w MR16 12v spots with Crompton 5w Led. 2 years later one has dimmed (when filmed it has a flashing effect when played back) and one is flashing on and off like a disco light. Both have cracks in the back of the lamp. Have I messed up by not considering the transformers? Should I try to get them replaced as…

Changing drain routing
Hey The house next door had some guttering work done, however the pipe down to the ground had been left loosely connected. The landlord popped around today to explain that the current pipe "doesn't go any where". He has asked permission to re route the pipe over our wall and create a soakage on our property as it would…

Has my carpet been laid correctly
Hi, I have just had my my carpet fitted but there are a few niggling things I am not sure if correct. 1. The carpet in the hall doesn't sit tight against the wall. In the other rooms it does. There are some brown buts which need painting but overall if I was fitting this carpet I would have fitted it tight against the wall…

Gas motorised valve
Quick question - gas condenser boiler seems to be working fine but doesn't always stay on long enough (so rads only lukewarm). However when I switch the 'motorised valve' to manual (while the boiler is off) the boiler then stays on for as long as required. Does this make sense or just coincidence? Thanks for any help given.

Extending glass dining table
I've been trying to find a glass dining table (preferably circular) that is around 1m diameter (or square) to start with and can be extended. Everything I've found has been thousands of pounds. Has anyone come across one on their travels that doesn't cost a grand or more?

Bugs!
I've just moved into a new flat, ground floor. Not lived on ground floor before.. gather I may have a somewhat more direct battle with bugs? Its an old converted factory here. Anyway, I've noticed intermittently, a few small brown bugs climbing the walls! Here are some photos I took: How can I find out what they are? I…

Cooker and Boiler Joint Wiring
Hi - I have a electric cooker that needs replacing, however the cooker and gas boiler are wired to the same switch on the wall. If you switch the oven off at the switch, the boiler gets switched off also. The fitters wont touch this connection as they say it should have separate wiring for the boiler and for the cooker. Is…

Anyone know of a short table-top dishwasher? (less than 410mm high)
Hi In a rental property without a dishwasher, and it's driving us mad. There's space on the counter for a table-top one, but the gap between the counter and the bottom of the wall cabinets is 410mm, which seems too short for most, e.g.: Indesit ICD661 440mm Bosch SKS51E28EU 450mm Zanussi ZDM16301WA 447mm ?????? List of things I'll need to notify the council about?
I'm waiting to exchange on our first property, and want to get all my ducks in line for when we complete. The house is going to have a full renovation,so what do I need to notify the council about? There will be a new consumer unit and shower, which I believe are notifiable, but what else? The roof and windows are the only…
