List of things I'll need to notify the council about?

I'm waiting to exchange on our first property, and want to get all my ducks in line for when we complete. The house is going to have a full renovation,so what do I need to notify the council about? There will be a new consumer unit and shower, which I believe are notifiable, but what else? The roof and windows are the only things not being changed I think. Thanks.

  • The electrician should do the paperwork for building control for any notifiable work, provided you employ one that can self-certify.

If you are just redecorating then I can't see what else they will need to know about. Given you're keeping the roof and windows I am going to guess you are also going to keep the walls.

  • If you're planning on removing a lot of internal plasterwork on external walls you may trigger the requirement to notify building control of a change of thermal element, which will mean you'll need to insulate the walls the building regs standards.

Unfortunately he can't self-certify. One wall is going to be knocked through, but we need to wait until we can investigate as to whether it needs building regs/rsj etc or whether it can just be removed.

Thanks, I'll probably give them a call and outline everything that we have planned.

We're hoping much of the plasterwork can be retained, although that's something to bear in mind. I knew that re-rendering a percentage of the outside could trigger the thermal clause, but not the inside.
