Cooker and Boiler Joint Wiring

Hi - I have a electric cooker that needs replacing, however the cooker and gas boiler are wired to the same switch on the wall. If you switch the oven off at the switch, the boiler gets switched off also. The fitters wont touch this connection as they say it should have separate wiring for the boiler and for the cooker. Is this illegal? I am in rented property and my landlord is not very helpful and insisting that I have to arrange and pay for myself. Thanks

  • Sorry - model is ESSENTIALS CFSEWH14 Electric Solid Plate Cooker - hope that helps! - Stu
  • Who does the cooker belong to?
  • Thanks for coming back. The property had a cooker in it, however it was left by the previous tenant, it was not the landlords. As it has now given up I have to replace.
  • The boiler should be protected by its own 3A or 5A switch/plug. I'd say that your property has been visited by a man on a horse

The boiler could still be protected by such a fuse ....

And it is not listed on your entry inventory?

Obviously, you are not feeling comfortable to take this on yourself, so don't .... I think I would look for someone else to do the job and brief them to leave the cooker lead in place and swap cookers on the end of the lead. When you move out take the cooker and the lead and leave the problem behind.

the problem is that the cooker and the boiler should not be wired to the same switch (and probably running off the same fuse)

As long as the boiler is independently fused, this addresses the main objection to spurring it off the cooker circuit.

Obviously OP is going to go nowhere with getting the LL to sort this out.
