cleaning grouting between floor tiles
Hello, I know there are several products on the market for cleaning grouting but wondered which ones people have found the most effective? I have just moved into a house with lovely floor tiles but grouting is dirty. I realise that some of it may be deep staining that I wont be able to remove but would like to have a go.…

Which burglar alarm?
I've had two quotes to fit an alarm to my ground floor flat (wifi). Both very similar cost, one is for an Enforcer 32WE, the other for a Powermax. I have no way of knowing if one is any better than the other. Any knowledgeable folk out there who can advise?

Immersion Timer
Hi, looking for some advice if I may? I have a hot water tank which I had timer fitted to last year, it stopped working about 2 months ago and I've been using the override/boost switch to heat hot water as and when I need it. Got a new timer fitted which lasted all of a day before breaking! Had a quick look on the reviews…

New plaster not drying out
We have had trouble with damp/condensation on one of our outer bathroom walls for years. Recently we fitted an extractor fan on this wall and also had all the walls and ceilings re plastered. The wall that was particularly bad had new plaster put on over two days as it was quite thick. This was done 12 weeks ago and all…

kitchen advice
Hi all, just wondering if i could get some advice. I have had a small extension done on side of kitchen. Work should be completed this week (going into week 9, was told it would take 4-6 weeks). I ordered the kitchen and originally wanted the kitchen company to fit it but my builder was insistent in his crowd doing it. I…

Where to buy sliding wall partition for through-lounge?
Recently bought a 1930s semi, the lounge and dining room has been knocked through. I was thinking of getting a lodger in the dining room and dining in the reception room instead. (3.6m x 4.72m) Is there a good way to seal up the separation between the two rooms without bricking it up again, e.g. big solid sliding doors? I…

Loft insulation with loft ventilation system?
Hi all, I have a loft ventilation system fitted which stops/minimises condensation. I have had this for over 10 years in more than one property and it is an effective piece of kit. Anyway, current property has minimal loft insulation. Less than 5cm. I have been trying to find out if I can increase my loft insulation to the…

point of use water heaters
Once again just asking for some advice and hope someone can help. The 'new' house we are in has an immersion water heater. No mains gas, just electricity on economy 7. We've had the bath removed and had an electric shower installed instead so we have no need to heat a whole tankful of water overnight. I would like…

Strange lines wallpaper
On the downstairs living room there are some squiggly lines on the wallpaper. Some follow a vaguely diagonal line, some vertical, some horizontal and some go off at odd tangents. I suppose the lines could best be described as straight but squiggly as if drawn by someone with a slightly shaky hand. If that makes any sense.…

Worcester 28cdi Boiler
The dial which controls the heating on the front of my boiler has completely broken off, and cannot seemingly be put back on. It looks like it was almost part of the original unit. If I get a new one from the manufactuers', will a competent heating engineer be able to put it on for me, or am I now stuck with a boiler with…

Low Pressure Shower
Hi all :) For a number of years since we've first had a shower unit installed in the house (~10 years or so), we have had an issue with the water flow/pressure. We had the water board out and they identified that the issue is because we share a water connection with 4 houses in a block, so when we use the taps/shower the…

Replacing boiler
We have an old Potterton running a open-vented heating/hw system. A local Vaillant installer has suggested replacing with a 'System' boiler which does away with the f&e tank in the loft space and we retain the cold water storage tank. The new boiler incorporates an expansion tank and the CH pump. Your views would be…

wooden window latch/lock - advice please
Hi I have wooden windows with metal latches which also have locks. Basically the latch turns to "3 o'clock" to open the window, and fits into a catch on the frame when turned to "6 o'clock" to close the window. Even though the latches are made of metal (two on each window) one has broken in two so I am trying to replace…

Replacing Euro style cylinder lock
Two questions, please. Previously on this board the ABS Avocet locks have been recommended as among the best. Would you say this is still the case? I'm trying without success (so far) to find a local locksmith that stocks them. Assuming I have to order by 'phone, I would plan to have them sent to a friends address. Has…

Cheapest heating? Wood burner???
I want to install a wood burning stove in an outbuilding, where currently my cats are living, but after that it will be a "den" or second living room if you like. I need heating in there that isn't going to cost a fortune. I thought a stove would be good because it can be left unattended providing heat overnight. When it…
