Carpet advice needed!
Hoping someone here can advise as I'm getting very confused with lots of conflicting recommendations! My DH and I have recently moved into our first house and are looking at gradually redecorating throughout (1960s is really not our style!). We've started looking at carpets and we liked the Nolan Caramel at Carpetright,…

Carpet in the Garage? Pros/cons
Buying a house at the moment and it has quite a nice sized integral garage. Not massive, but big enough to comfortably fit a car in with space at the back for fridge freezer etc. But the floor is carpeted. Now I'm not certain of the pros/cons of having the carpet. Or any other alternative flooring for that matter.…

Diagonal crack above door
Hi My house is pretty old and has a diagonal crack above the bedroom door. I'm slightly worried about it, but am not sure if I need to be or not. Can anyone advise about what it might be, how much it might cost and what sort of professional I might need to get out to diagnose the problem? Thanks in advance Gwen

Size of a new garage?
I need to buy a garage which would be used mainly for storage rather than housing a car. I was thinking along the lines of 18 Ft long and 9 Ft wide but maybe I don't need that big, hence my question - what would be a reasonable sized garage if I were to sell the house in the future? Just need a bog standard Pent roof style…

Replacing my boiler.
I have a large one bedroomed flat with 6 radiators. My current boiler is coming to the end of its life and needs replacing. British Gas has quoted a replacement Potterton Promax at £2360-00 to include all works. Who would be good for getting alternative quotations?

shower enclosures
I want to replace my shower cubicle. I don't know if I am able to replace the cubicle only and use the same tray at the bottom? If so, I have measured the current shower enclosure as being 730mm by 730mm but am unable to find a shower unit of this exact size but most say there is room for adjustment. Only I don't see how…

Revive Central Heating Radiator - to good to be true?
I'm looking for a Double Convector Radiator. The ideal size (to fit under a large window) is 2.2m long by 400mm high. I've found this one from MrCentrallHeating.co.uk: Revive Double Deluxe K2 But it looks ridiculously cheap at £94 and so I'm very dubious about the quality. I can't find another radiator with a similar size.…

White mould in attic - what will help?
Hi, We live in a semi dating from 1895. Roof is relatively new - we think - but there are some repointing issues with the chimney stacks on the roof. We have some white mould on the rafters in the attic. It's most prevalent at the sloping lower parts of the rafters where they meet the attic floor (i.e. the bottom corners…

Hi there, Hopefully be moving into new house in not too distant future. The house has an integral garage with electricity already set up and the central heating boiler is in there. Planning permission needed?
I am looking at a house today that is half way through a refurbishment. This involves converting an integral garag to a habitable room. But the garage door is still In situ, which strikes me as weird. Not sure about planning permission but surely building regs apply and surely changing the door is the first thing you do…

Looking for cooker hood with really bright lights
An elderly relative as cooker hood which just recirculates via a filter and the only lights are two small-wattage incandescent bulbs. Due to failing eyesight, they really need far stronger task lighting over the hob. Anyone know of a cooker hood which has an array of LEDs/halogens which are more like 100W of 'old skool'…

Which type of job?
I have a few jobs around the house and for some of them, I've no idea which kind of tradesman I need Interior doors are squeaking when moving, and the lock on one is broken (the latch is stuck inward so the door bangs noisily against the door frame) - joiner?
