Size of a new garage?

I need to buy a garage which would be used mainly for storage rather than housing a car.
I was thinking along the lines of 18 Ft long and 9 Ft wide but maybe I don't need that big, hence my question - what would be a reasonable sized garage if I were to sell the house in the future?
Just need a bog standard Pent roof style for Storage, but don't want to go so small that it would be unusable for a car.
I know it's a bit like "how long is a piece of string"?

What do other properties have nearby? Take this as a guide. I needed to build one much bigger as it was to hold an RV, but it looked good and blended - planning permission was a breeze.0

The look of it isn't a problem as it is to be sited at the bottom of a reasonably long garden and the only other building is a shed.
I am just wanting a sectional pebble dashed garage (that most people have in this area) with price being the main factor.0 -
It needs to be big enough to get a car in. Otherwise it's not a garage. It's merely a big shed. The cost differential between a big shed and something you can actually use as a garage is minimal.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

One of the biggest problems with garages is that the door size limits what car can be put in it. My new Kia Cee'd has large mirrors which do not fold electrically. Which is a bit of a pain.I can afford anything that I want.

That was the whole point of my question! It needs to be a "normal" sized Garage that is fully usable for a car (if ever I need to sell up) but I will only use it for household storage as I don't drive.
I was thinking along the lines of 18ft long and 9ft wide (8ft doors) could I get away with 16ft long?0 -

I used to work on garages for the national buiders - Barratts, McAlpine etc. A typical detached garage had a 100mm thick wall. A single gagage would be about 5500 by 2700 overall. A double garage would be about 5500 by 5500 overall. My existing double garage was built by a national builder - this is about 5600 by 5600 overall, so you will get the drift of my response.
A car parking space built for office and supermarket development will be 4800 by 2400. I have worked on some developments where the 4800 has been increased to 5300.

Actually the problem with my garage is that the mechanism of the up and over Hormann doors impinges into the door opening width. If you make sure that you buy a door that has its mechanism entirely behind the door frame the problem will not occur. The Hormann doors are very good quality, but I would never have fitted them if I had realised about the faulty design featureI can afford anything that I want.

Agree with the comment re nearby garages. I'd take that as a guide as anybody looking for a garage would expect at least something similar in return. If you can make it bigger without compromising other qualities of your property such as the size of the driveway or front garden, I'd imagine this would give you a bit of an advantage if you ever decide to sell. I'd definitely avoid making it small and impossible to park in just because you don't because although many of us don't park in garages, most of us also like to know that we can if we needed to or wanted to. Good luck.0
