Fitting radiators found a great product
At the weekend I fitted another radiator and apart from the botch job done by the previous installer everything went well until the refill. The side of the radiator with the TRV just would not stop leaking. I took the radiator off removed and refitted the new connector to the new radiator using PTFE tape as…

Venting fireplaces in chimney breasts - best way?
Hello, We have a house from the late 1890s, where all but one of the fires have decorative iron fireplaces that completely seal the flue. We're having ventilated cowls added to the chimney pots on the roof but have been told we need to add grilles or something similar to ensure air can circulate in the chimney at the…

Electric Board and Meter
My current electric meter and board are under my stairs, the location is ok but what I need is access to the wall behind. The wall is not in a great state and I'd like to take it down, put it back up and reattach the meter and board. I've chatted to an electrician and he said he can only work on the consumer unit and I…

Boiler short cycling and rebalancing
Do I solve short cycling by rebalancing and opening the valves a little more? System usually runs on pump speed 3 as this is the only speed the boiler can loose enough heat to stop it turning off early, even on max stat. However it's noisy and cavitates a bit. If I switch it down to 2 but open up the rad valves a bit more…

painting a door frame
I'm renovating a house. This is the 4th house I've renovated. Am I the only person who paints the tops of doors and door frames, and for that matter window frames? Every house I've done up has had door tops and frame tops that were a mess. I always paint them with the same paint as the rest of the frame (ie gloss), but…

Coping Stones Theft - ongoing problem
I originally posted this in the insurance section, but as I am not going to claim on the insurance as the excess makes it not worth claiming at all, am going to try here now. plughole blockage-is brown vinegar ok
Hi I've a plughole blockage. I don't have any white vinegar as I used it all yesterday, and wondered if brown vinegar, together with soda crystals will do the job. I don't fancy using chemical unblockers in case they react with the soda crystals and white vinegar, put down there yesterday. Thanks
