painting a door frame

I'm renovating a house. This is the 4th house I've renovated. Am I the only person who paints the tops of doors and door frames, and for that matter window frames? Every house I've done up has had door tops and frame tops that were a mess. I always paint them with the same paint as the rest of the frame (ie gloss), but when I employed a professional he told me they always paint them the same emulsion as the walls.
This would explain why they're always matt and impossible to dust, but it just seems bizarre to me. For one thing, emulsion isn't designed for use on wood. For another thing, the tops of the doors and frames are easier to dust if they've been glossed.
Am I missing something?
My 'pro's attitude was that they're so high up no-one sees them, so it doesn't really matter...
