Do I have to return part fitted that didn't solve problem

If a firm fits a part that they say will solve problem and then it doesn't despite repeat visits - resulting in refund request would you expect to return the part before getting refund? taking into account time off work, phone calls to try and resolve etc etc

it would help if you told us the prob & what part you are talking aboutI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
If I pay someone for their knowledge and experience to come and repair something of mine I expect them to get it right, not take wild guesses at my expense - to test thoroughly before replacing anything.
If they diagnose a fault, identify its part xxx and then replace it but it turns out that this was not the cause of the fault and that the part they replaced was perfectly OK then I would not expect to pay for that part however would expect them to identify the true cause of the fault and put the old part back.
However, it can often require the replacement of one part to diagnose the fault to being another, often multiple parts may need replacing i.e replacing 1 shows that as that part is now OK then it must be yyy part.
The choice then is to fix yyy part and then do you put the original xxx part back in? if its very costly then you may consider it however could the original xxx part actually be faulty or the cause of part yyy going faulty? who knows.
If the original part is no longer available, perhaps because the fitter took it away - then I'd expect to not have to give the new part back as I would expect my unit to be returned to its original state and if they cannot do that then its their problem not mine.
BTW - for context what are we discussing?
boiler? car? gas fire? washing machine?0
