Storage heater burning smell
Hi, I have been looking around the internet as one of our storage hearses has started emitting a burning smell. Various places list causes like new heaters, dust that's settled over the year, decorating fumes etc. but I can't find a reason that would seem to fit. The heater has been on for the past week already, so can't…

Damp smell in one room only but no sign of damp!

The room is a down stairs room with one exterior wall, and that wall is showing no evidence of damp. We spent a day moving stuff about and having a clear-out…

Scrap metal price for a random chair
Hello all I have a random computer chair that is made of steel at the base, stalk and arms. It's a bit torn. It's quite heavy and must be at least 5kg. It's got a plastic seat and backing and still covered in fabric. Is something like this worth taking to the scrappy? No experience in this area and welcome your advice.

radio repair
My small DAB radio has lost it's display (?led) so although it works, it does not show which station it's on. Okay at the mo because it's on radio 4 and I like that, but if I want to change channel I have no idea which station I'm on. I've done a bit of an internet search and all I come up with for repairs are big…

Deionised Water For Steamer
A Morphy Richards steam we bought says to only use 'Deionised Water' to prevent limescale build up! I can't find this is in any of the major supermarkets. Anyone any ideas where I could buy it? I was wondering if that ironing water you can buy is the same stuff?

New Boiler, Now Two Radiators Don't Work
Quick question for some advice. I had a new boiler fitted as the old one broke. It was on all night but two radiators are still freezing cold, despite being full of water. I originally thought it was just being slow. Bled and re-bled the radiators in the approximate order from the boiler but the last two on the loop seem…

Need built-in kitchen cooker extractor replacing
Hi there can anyone recommend anyone in West Yorkshire - presumably we would need a builder/electrician. It's a Caple one and is built in to the chimney breast and and then tiled. Lights stopped working when we had a water leak from above but the extractor fan still works. Had an electrician who said the electrical feed to…

Electical Work - Will I need a whole rewire?

I've recently moved into a new house, the electrics are dated (30 years or so) thieve been checked and their safe, but recommended a rewire as its the older style Black and Red cables, however we can't quite afford this yet. Damp / Mold under bedroom window.
For some strange reason the previous occupiers moved the radiator from underside of the bedroom window to the other side of the room. We are now getting damp and mold underneath the window. Apart from relocating the radiator again (this will be done in due time) what can we do to reduce this / limit this?

immersion heater / condensation troubles
Hi, folks. I'm a new tenant renting (a month or so) from a private landlord (ground floor flat). The bathroom has been prone to condensation since I moved in, I assumed because the water heater is in there in a small cupboard. I'd started leaving the window open a small amount and it seemed to be keeping it at bay. However…

Morning All I've just had a new boiler put in, the boiler has been installed in what is currently the garage, soon to be a utility room. However due to a delay in building work, I now have 5 pipes (hot and cold water, heating to and from flow and gas pipe) that run about 2 meters through the garage before they enter the…

Overpowering Air Freshener
I recently bought an oil based air freshener (one of those bottles containing fragranced oil in which you put wooden sticks) and the smell is overpowering. Is there any way I can dilute it effectively? Would adding some neutral oil like olive oil or sunflower oil help? Any suggestions? The strength of it in a small loo is…

J.A.S.'s fixing the damp & swimming pool in the house thread....
The survey came back that the extended wall & the front wall has a damp issue, which it certainly does as i can feel it. However the wall that joins on to next door, i'm wondering if this is damp also. It doesn't feel as damp & they probably didn't pick up on it as IIRC there was furniture & stuff against the wall. You can…
