Storage heater burning smell

Hi,
I have been looking around the internet as one of our storage hearses has started emitting a burning smell. Various places list causes like new heaters, dust that's settled over the year, decorating fumes etc. but I can't find a reason that would seem to fit. The heater has been on for the past week already, so can't be dust anymore; it's old not new, and there's been no decorating. Everything I've seen also tends to list a paraffin smell; but this is more like burnt toast really.
Mainly want to know if this could be a fire safety concern; but also advice on getting rid of it would be great.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
- Mark Twain
Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.

Isolate it, wait for it to cool, remove the front panel, and take a look inside.
It could be something dropped inside, it could be nothing. Taking a quick look should settle your curiosity.0
