mortar and pestle
I've just broken the households granite/stone one, namely the pestle and i don't know how but i got the feeling that it must have been fragile anyway........! So i'm thinking metal. I can weld. Steel holds no fears, but wood and stone are a no no from now on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cold Pressure (Low) in Kitchen Tap
I seem to have got a problem with my kitchen tap, the pressure seems to be really low. This only affects the cold water where its running really slow. Hot water seems to be fine and running fast. The bathroom seems to be fine and this is close to the mains water. The outside water supply also seems to be fine and this…

Local waste dump charging for DIY waste
Visited our local waste/recycling site in Oxfordshire this morning with some rubble (to be put in rubble container not landfill) and told there is now a charge for DIY waste. You can dump 3 items a month (an item is 1 bag of rubble or soil or a sink?toilet/shower screen or piece of carpet) and after that there is a charge.…

Do you need planning premission for an external glass balustade?
Hi, We are buying a house with a flat concrete garage roof which can be accessed by a door from one of the bedrooms and the present owners have used it as a sun deck, as it has fabulous views. However there are no railings and we were thinking of a glass balustrade/ fence, so as not to spoil the view. Would we need…

Freezer in my garage
Looking for a freezer suitable to have in my garage, and I gather not all are suitable because they can't withstand the cold (:D). Can anyone recommend a particular make that will be fine in the cold? Looking for an upright model rather than a chest freezer. Many thanks

Radiators Not Warming Up
There are certain radiators in my house that just aren't warming up. Occasionally they do, but generally they don't even feel aired. Yes, I've bled them, but water comes out straight away - no air at all. What could be the issue?

Trapped air in toilet filling system
Each time the cistern refills after a flush we get a hum that sounds like trapped air. Has got progressively worse last couple of days. Just does this with the downstairs cloakroom loo only. Is there an easy way to bleed air from the system to stop this happening or might there be another reason for this? Thanks as usual

Where to Plug in Washing Machine?
I've heard it say that washing machines should be on their own plug because of the draw of energy. I have a single plug socket available but it reaches the limit of the wire. However behind the washing machine is a 4-bar which has the fridge, freezer and microwave plugged in currently. Do you think it would be safe to plug…

Plumbing Inspections
I am a landlord of a few properties in London, two of which require regular plumbing inspections because they are in high-rise blocks. The plumbers that inspect have set their own guidelines as to what is needed to pass an inspection, and then send estimates to fix the faults. So far, my plumbing has never been passed by…

Replacing GU10 with LEDs - Too Small
Hello, I am in the process of replacing all GU10 bulbs but the downlights (which are fire-rated) look like these and standard LED GU10 lights (54mm lengths) are too short. Looks like they need to be 75mm to fit but they are difficult to find and more expensive. The question is can I cut through the lamp holder (black…

Worktop question
Our kitchen is almost done; unfortunately the worktop has been done pretty poorly with quite a few scratches and in level joins and so we are going to get it redone. It is Magnet premium laminate 38mm. My question is this:is duropal better laminate than this? Or should we go the whole hog and get quartz? What are people's…

How easy is it to lay laminate flooring?
My husband wants to save money by fitting laminate flooring himself. He's never done it before but having slotted a couple of pieces together in a shop reckons it will be a doddle. I'm not so sure as he's mid 60s and has some arthritis. Is it a relatively simple task...or best left to the professional fitters?

Ventilation
I could really do with some advice on improving home ventilation. It's driving me crazy. We used to live in a Victorian terrace, draughty and cost a ton to heat in the Winter. If you turned off the heating the house would be cold in about an hour. But we never had condensation! Now we live in a house that has been…

House extension - where on earth do we start?
As the title suggests we would like to start planning for an extension, but have no idea- about budgets, order of events, rules and regs etc. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good site to do some research? We only moved in a few months ago, so we are in no hurry. This is something we will want for when our…

Leaking tap
Hello, I'm rubbish at DIY but hoping to fix this leaky tap by myself, hopefully it's just a washer that needs replacing? But, er... how do I get in to it? Do I just force the top off or is there a screw somewhere, does anyone know? thanks

Any suggestions for wall lights?
I've tried Homebase and B&Q, both absolutely useless and unhelpful. Can anyone on here suggest anywhere that sells wall lights? All I need them to be is compatible with dimmer switches. That's it. Not fussed about much else but I am genuinely struggling to find anything!!

schreiber afp6302 fridge intermittent cooling
We have had the above integrated fridge for 8 years and it seems to vary between very cool and not cool. Water collects under the two food trays and has to be mopped out on a regular basis. The fridge stopped cooling a few years back, so we replaced the thermometer and this worked. Two questions; could the thermometer need…
