Employing Tradesmen
Ok, first time buyer, purchased a flat recently and have enlisted some tradesmen to finish a kitchen installation. My dad started it off but was unable to finish it. I leave them to get on with the work whilst I'm at work, come home this evening to find they've scratched my dishwasher. It's only a small scratch, but…

Extension for freezer?
I want to buy a freezer to put in the garage. There is, as far as I am aware, only one brand that specifically state their freezers can be used in such a location. This freezer only has a 1.5m long lead and it states it shouldn't be used on an extension lead. Many, many reviews from buyers have mentioned this as being a…

No where to connect earth wire on IKEA Alang ceiling light
I'm trying to put up an Ikea Alang ceiling lamp ( which has a plastic flush fitting) and there is a little plastic junction box thingy labelled L and N with brown and blue wires respectively. So I can connect the red and black from the house wiring to these but there is nowhere in the new fitting to connect the greenand…

reclaimed parquet, bitumen and underfloor heating
Hi I am thinking of laying parquet (glued onto ply) on top of underfloor heating and, ideally, would prefer reclaimed parquet. However, I know most of reclaimed parquet has bitumen on it which is a real time-consuming task to remove. I have seen lots on ebay but one lot in particular is described as not having a thick…

fixing a leaking radiator pipe
I have a small leak coming from the central heating pipe that feeds the radiator. Because it's the first joint straight off the copper feed pipe, the only way to undo and redo the joint would involve draining the whole heating system (which I really don't want to do). I've tried using some LS-X jointing compound but it's…

Chest freezer: John Lewis or Argos?
I'm having a dilemma about buying a chest freezer. Argos has a Value chest freezer for 124.99 and I have a voucher to get another £20 off. It comes with a one year guarantee with the option of taking out a three years breakdown care policy at £44.99. The John Lewis freezer is £179.99 (reduced from 199.00) with a three year…

Garage extension
Not sure if this is the right forum - I did check but nothing else seemed to fit! I am thinking about a single storey, single car garage extension plus adjoining porch to connect to the side of my house, and I have no idea whether I should give up on the idea or how long it would take me to budget for it. I know it's how…

Dishwasher buying
Hi there - I'm looking to buy an integrated dishwasher and have seen a few models with a top cutlery tray, rather than a basket on the lower level. I'm pretty sure that manufacturers such as Neff, Boshch, Siemens and Miele stock these, but I can't seem to identify which of their models have them, as it's not all. I've…

extendable curtain pole
hi in our new home we have windows which are 238cm wide. curtain poles come in either 240 cm or 300cm. 230 is not enough as it wont allow curtain to be fully opened. 300 is too wide leaving over 35 cm on either side of window. I have seen the extendable curtain poles. these normally have one section which is smaller than…

Lino over carpet
We are in the process of becoming cat foster carers and will be using our spare bedroom as a 'cat room' until they can be let into the rest of the house. We have just recently carpeted in there so will need something to cover the floor that is easy to clean and won't ruin the brand new cream carpet! would it be possible to…

White stains on black clothes after washing?
Before anyone suggests anything rude...it's not! Basically, I get white stains on a particular pair of trousers, and hubby on a particular black shirt after they've been washed. All other dark and black items seem unaffected. We only use liquid, don't use fabric softner either, so have no idea what it is or how to get rid…

Fixing Ikea hinges
Any thoughts on how I might fix these kind on hinges? The screws have torn out the wood so they won't hold if they go back in. Because the hinges are levered I wouldn't have thought I could replace it with a normal hinge. Any ideas? Cheers Pete

I'm thinking of getting a wall or two knocked down to make my kitchen bigger. Would this be something I'd need to get a builder or a joiner round for? Thanks

Best value for fitted wardrobes
Hello all, OH and I are currently buying our first house and the layout of the master bedroom seems to suggest that fitted wardrobes are best. That and the fact that both he and I have sooooo many clothes that we need a lot of storage space! Fitted wardrobes, however, seem to be pretty expensive at a time that is pretty…

Are oil filled radiators notably more efficient than convector heaters?
I live in a small, non centrally heated home. Insulation isn't great but hopefully getting sorted soon. Can't put in central heating or storage heaters as is rented... landlord might agree to storage heaters but I'm going on the basis they won't. Electric only - no gas. Electric bill during average winter months can get…

Extractor fan for kitchen
The extractor fan in my kitchen doesn't have slats that can be closed when the fan is not in use and consequently the wind blows through the open vents when the fan is shut off I've just had central heating installed and worried that, the this coming winter, the wind blowing into the kitchen through the open vents will…

What is this CH device?
Our house was built in 2004 and has a Potterton Powermax boiler. On the incoming mains near the boiler there is this device. What is it and does it need any maintenance? Is it a pressure limiting valve as the markings on it suggest or is it some sort of filter? The grey plastic pipe on the left is the incoming mains and…
