Best value for fitted wardrobes

Hello all,
OH and I are currently buying our first house and the layout of the master bedroom seems to suggest that fitted wardrobes are best. That and the fact that both he and I have sooooo many clothes that we need a lot of storage space!
Fitted wardrobes, however, seem to be pretty expensive at a time that is pretty money-consuming for us anyway. Has anyone any suggestions as to how to do this a bit cheaper? Should we just go Swedish; buy some cheap (on sale) wardrobes and customise the insides; or can it be done from scratch ourselves easily enough?
Any help welcomed, because from what I can see so far its going to cost more than our corner sofa which I really can't stomach!!!

You have a couple of cheaper options. One is to find a decent skilled diy person or a carpenter & ask them for a price to build you exactly what you want. This is what I did in my previous house & worked out a fraction of what the fitted wardrobe places would charge. Ok, there is work involved afterwards in painting them or whatever after installation, but well worth it for the money you save.
The other option is to still use skilled diy person or carpenter & buy all the stuff you need by shopping around for best prices & have sliding wardrobe doors installed. This is what I've just done in my new home & again it has cost about one third of what a company would quote for the same job. The beauty of it has been being able to specify the interior regarding hanging rails, shelving etc. exactly as I want it & not having to have off the shelf interior fittings. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
