Lino over carpet

We are in the process of becoming cat foster carers and will be using our spare bedroom as a 'cat room' until they can be let into the rest of the house.
We have just recently carpeted in there so will need something to cover the floor that is easy to clean and won't ruin the brand new cream carpet!
would it be possible to fit lino over the carpet? It doesn't have to look perfect but it would be more practical that plastic sheeting/matting that would come up if the cat scratched at the floor
Do you think it would work? If not is there anything you could recommend? I don't want to remove the carpet just incase we decide the fostering isn't for us
Thanks

Depends what you do with the lino. I assume it doesn't need to be properly fitted at the edge of the room so I would just get some lino that is slightly bigger than the carpet and just lay it over the carpet without fitting it. You can then just lift it out once the cats are house trained.0

It wouldn't look great - but it's function over fashion right?
The only other thing I could think is to get that film that they use to cover the carpet when you move house?
This sort of stuff: http://www.randjbuildershardware.co.uk/carpet-protector-film-100m-x-600.html?utm_source=google_shopping&gclid=COTCzMuwjrkCFcOV3god00YAxw0 -
Make sure they can't get underneath the edges, as they could get stuck and not be able to get back on top of the lino again.0

Yes sounds like a good idea, but agree with jellie. They will want to get under it and explore if it looks even *remotely* interesting round the edges.
Best get the bulk order of wet wipes and Dettol in now
I do say that in jest though, mine are a constant source of untidiness and cause for emergency cleaning up but I wouldn't give them up for the world - enjoy!0 -
get lino 12 inches bigger on each side than the room, cut it in the corners and duck tape it to the tops of the skirting boards, and along the cuts to make a water tight , room sized, dish.
also tack the lino down with wide head nails and tape over the heads
it will look terrible, but will stop your carpet getting trashed0
