Smallest size for a wetroom?
We're looking into extension possibilities, and was wondering if anyone can help with a rough idea of what sort of square meterage is needed to put in a wetroom. It would be nice to be able to have a kitchen, porch and wetroom downstairs in the extension, but if there's not space then it would just be an extra downstairs…

pros and cons of Vorwerk Antron carpets?
We have a moth problem in our building and neighbours are reluctant to keep spending money to eradicate it. Our carpet has holes and we're looking to replace it. We're thinking either wood floors (subfloor is sound proofed and if the others won't solve the moth issue, then why should we spend huge money on 'moth food'?!)…

Laminate flooring over tiles in kitchen?
The man that put in our kitchen laid the ceramic floor tiles straight on to the floor. Did not lay any plywood down. Apparently if we want them changed we will need a new floor underneath. Is it possible to lay laminate floor on top of these tiles or is removal our only option? Would really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Strong Kitchen Cabinet handles
2 years back we had a Howden's kitchen fitted. Great stuff but the screw that held a cabinet door handle broke - then another one. And just recently another one. OK the last one was the fridge door and we all know a fast close can create quite a vacuum. So I went to homebase and bought a different handle. The screw broke…

Ceiling paper - long or short width
Hello Just some advice. Is the direction of the ceiling paper better to go the long (wall to wall) or short width of the room (wall to window)? Or doesn't it matter?

Putting a bathroom upstairs - joists for bath
Hey We are moving a bathroom upstairs. The bath will run the same way our joists run. I know back in the day you probably needed to reinforce joists for cast iron, but how about for modern steel baths - Do they need to be reinforced?

De-Humidifier Recomendations Please
We have used an EcoAir dessicant dehumidifier and was very pleased with it. Cheap to run, effective but poorly made and dreadful customer service. There seems to be a problem with the machines in that the heating element goes after a few months of use, usually outside the warranty period. Ours certainly did. We have had…

GU 5.3 halogen (energy saver?)
Hi my kitchen in my new property has 12 GU 5.3 bulbs rated 20w (12v).... I get the feeling its costing to much money as I seem to be using a lot more electricity... is it possible to get energy saving versions of this bulb (it has 2 small pins) say maybe 5w that gives a 20w equivalent light? Thanks oh, and is it better to…

Back boiler replacement??
Sorry if there's already a thread on this. So my husband and I are considering buying a 1970s terraced house. It still has its original back boiler. The current owners say they've never had any problems with it. My questions are.... How long is this boiler likely to last before packing up? Is it terribly inefficient to…

Best way to block a hole in the ceiling
I've had a new ceiling put up in my garage and i've very happy with it. My soil stack passes through one of the back corners in the garage and the plasterer wasn't able to completely seal the gap between the plasterboard and the soil pipe. As it's a garage ceiling i'm not bothered about aesthetics. What i'd like to do is…

Removing Pop-Up waste
Does anyone know how to safely remove the bit that you twist (just below the taps) to open the plug on this type of pop up waste mechanism? It has stopped working in that you can twist the knob but the plug doesn't lift. I have bought a replacement and I can see how that works as there is a small hole in the knob where a…

Anybody got a dyson DC19?
I bought the above yesterday and have assembled it. I am a bit confused where the hose connects to the main body, on my instructions it says it should click but it does not, I sort have to push the hose into the main body. I have emailed Dyson buthe did not seem to help and he sent me a link. My husband said there is…

Kitchen Doors repainted
I'm looking at jazzing up my kitchen. Initially I was going to replace the doors and door fronts with high gloss ones. I'm having issues finding a company that matches all the sizes so a colleague suggested I paint them. I'm guessing this is a different job than applying gloss to doors and skirts. My questions are: Has…

Gas hob ignitor constantly clicking
Hi, A friend has a fairly old Neff gas hob, which is constantly firing the ignitor. It's the type that has an ignitor on every knob. It has been doing this for a few weeks now. I've tried WD40 etc, but no luck so far. Does it sound like it needs a new ignition unit? Thanks.

Is it worth buying my neighbours double garage?
I share a driveway with my neighbour and even though the deeds say that neither of us can park in the entrance way sometimes their visitors do which makes access awkward/ inconvenient (thankfully the neighbours don't do it anymore). I think they are thinking of potentially moving soon and I didn't know whether to consider…

Mirror mirror on the wall....
..........oh I need one pretty damned small. Howdy people, first post here (please let me know if there's a more suitable thread). Anyway, to the point. I'm trying to find a small square/rectangular mirror of around 5" by 7" size. I was pounding the streets yesterday and wasted hours looking without any luck. So, here I…

Replacement backdoor advice, following burglary.
Hello, I was the unfortunate victim of a burglary over the long weekend and now have to try and work out how to repair the damage done to my back door. They smashed the door at the hinges, so the frame itself is going to need repair, along with the door itself. My DIY skills are pretty limited (particularly with anything…

Water soaking brickwork from neighbour's leaking toilet
My neighbour has an extension, and for some time water has been intermittently coming out of the bottom of this, going all over my patio and soaking into some of the bricks at the bottom of my back wall (ie back wall of house). I asked the neighbour if he knew what was causing this and he said oh yeah, he has a leaking…

The previous owner added a utility room exgtension onto the end of this, which is an additional 2.5m by 2.5m. Plan is…
