Ceiling paper - long or short width

Options
Hello

Just some advice.

Is the direction of the ceiling paper better to go the long (wall to wall) or short width of the room (wall to window)?

Or doesn't it matter?

I wouldn't have thought it matters. Going lengthways would mean fewer joins.

Away from the window would be my thoughts, regardless of the aspect.

Assuming the joints are going to be visible this would add depth towards the window, but make the joints more visible.

If you went across the room, parallei to the window, you wouldn't see the joints as lines, but any imperfection or overlap would show up more.

In essence it doesn't matter that much, you just need to factor in the above points.

I never found the longer lengths needed to go "down" the room an issue, it';s all awkward;)

You could try and work out which way gives the least waste, you can't have joints mid way across the room, well you can but...........:(
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Hang it at right angles to the window - long or short deosn't matter. If you hang it parallel to the window then you will get shadows thrown where one length butts up to the next unless you are really very very good at doing the job.

I always think if any wall or ceiling has had lining paper, it is hiding bad plaster.
    Just my opinion.

Funny that because thats exactly why you would normally do it.

Either way, if you seal or 'size' the ceiling 1st, and soak the paper well youl be able to slip it around once you've slapped it up to make the joints butt more precisely.

I guess hanging the short way or long way might also depend on how easy it is for you to set up movable staging (or a plank on boxes), as its far easier to stick up if you can set a level, stable platform across the whole room and walk across brushing it up in place just above your head in one fluid movement. So how long's your plank!

Use something like a plasterer's float (square of wood on a short central pole as handle to support the concertina of paper). Amazingly satisfying once you get the hang of it

It's also a dam sight easier if there are 2 of you, I wouldn't try it solo to be honest.

I think papering a ceiling is the only time I have actually "got my rag off" whilst doing a DIY job.:mad:

Window to opposite wall, otherwise no matter how good a paperhanger you are the light will show up every join.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

A soft broom of about 18" - 21" width does the job just as well as inventing another tool. :D
