Best way to block a hole in the ceiling

I've had a new ceiling put up in my garage and i've very happy with it. My soil stack passes through one of the back corners in the garage and the plasterer wasn't able to completely seal the gap between the plasterboard and the soil pipe.
As it's a garage ceiling i'm not bothered about aesthetics. What i'd like to do is seal the gap somehow.
My initial thought is to use expanding foam to block the hole and then cut the foam flush to the ceiling when it dries. I then intend to paint the whole ceiling.
Is this a good way to do it?

Would it not be better to box the soil pipe in instead? to hide it all.

^ Yes, it would but it's going to be a tricky boxing as it's got various waste pipes coming into it at (almost) right angles. My father is a carpenter, now retired, and he looked at it and said the boxing would be tricky as the holes for the various waste pipes would then have to be sealed. I may as well seal the single gap in the ceiling for the main stack.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0

Foam wont paint very well, Could you not foam it first then scrape it back a bit then use easi-fill. Quick sand then paint.
P.S Im guessing there is not a room above your garage.

How big is the gap between the plasterboard and the pipe then? Surprised the plasterer could not fill this unless the gap is massive....0

^ It's about 2 inches from the surface of the main downpipe to the plasterboard edge. Because of other wastepipes joining the main stack virtually at plasterboard level, there's no batten to fix any plasterboard onto to get it tighter to the downpipe.
That's why I was going to squirt a bit of foam in there and use a sharp scraper to trim it flush to the plasterboard.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0 -
trim it slightly behind and skim over the top and paint that.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
