Hi Hopefully someone can advise and give me a ball park figure. I'm looking to buy a property which currently has no drains (long story). On the deeds I would have the right to connect to the septic tank next door and I believe the pipework is there from previously however needs connecting up again. I'm wanting to factor…

How on earth do you change these spotlight bulbs?
I've recently moved into a rented house and have two spotlights out upstairs in the bathroom (one was out when I moved in and one went out last week). The problem is, I have no idea how to change the bulbs! The spotlights in the bathroom look different to the ones elsewhere in the house and there don't seem to be any…

Spacing for a new bathroom
Hey We are moving a bathroom upstairs. Our bath, basin and toilet will be along one wall. How much space should be given between each unit? Or doesnt it matter? Also, our bath will have approx 550mm walkway between the last half of the bath and a wall. Is this OK in terms of any regs? Thanks

Side Entrance Access
I have a pathway to the side of my house which is accessed by a wooden door. In the pathway is a door to the kitchen and a wooden gate to the garden. Very similar to this house (the right of it has wood door): The roof is a plastic type (no clue what). I don't find the pathway safe as the first door is easy to kick down…

Wiring in conduits on walls (indoors) - what do IEE regulations say?
Hi, I am renovating a flat and in some rooms in addition to the normal in-built mains sockets, there are power cables to mains sockets running on walls, encased in plastic clip-on conduits. I know I have to update some parts of the electrical system like the fuse box, but before I call out an electrician to have a look and…

Restoring Internal Wall
The house we bought last year is very open plan. Lounge, dining room and kitchen all knocked together. Turns out that all constantly living, eating etc in one room together is a pain. Especially in the winter with the kids. So we want to restore the wall that previously separated the lounge and dining room. Don't like…

Failure of low energy bulbs - problem with electrics?
A low energy bulb failed in our bathroom after only two years or so. This was just around the time that the shower isolator switch was changed. So yesterday we bought a Philips low energy bulb to replace it. This failed after only a couple of uses. Meanwhile other bulbs work with it (notably a Tungsten one). Is this more…

Water coming from old cut pipes
We have recently had a new c/h system - unvented cylinder closed system. So tank in attic went and cylinder in airing cupboard. There are a couple of pipes - look like a pair, close to each other, coming out from floor of old airing cupboard, which have been cut, left open, obviously redundant. These were possibly like…

Kitchen lights
Good Morning Our kitchen has a small attached utility room and the wife would like a four strip light in the kitchen and a matching two strip light in the utility end, would prefer Led or halogen. But cannot find any decent ones. Can anyone steer me in the right directions please and is there anything I should avoid or…

Washing machine extend warranty?
Had washing machine for 5 years and the extended warranty has just ran out. Paid £200 for the machine plus £100 for 5 year warranty and had 3 call outs for repairs in that time so that was probably worth it. I've had a letter offering continued cover for £5 something a month or £70 for the year. With 3 kids and 2 adults…

loft insulation when ceiling is sloping into the roof
my dd's room is bitter in winter. it is in the back part of the house that sticks out with a lower roof than the rest (victorian, but original part of the house). I can't afford to insulate the whole roof but can do this back bit to cover her room and the bathroom. but both the bathroom and her rooms have partially sloping…

Retrospective Planning
Money saving tip! Just build what you like then apply for retrospective planning if you get caught that is! Anyone else experience neighbours knowingly building without planning permission? Even lying on applications to get what they want. When I'm paying thousands doing it all by the book. Why am I being penalised for…

New build brick work
https://www.dropbox.com/sc/mw0t8aznhmgbyby/lvhPaeZSxs Hi all What do people think of my new build house brickwork? I think they have used different batches of bricks, different colour mortar. Doesn't look good. The house builder are saying there's no problem with it!

Opinion on Boiler Issue
Hello all, I am currently renting a property, to cut a short-story to the quick... my CO alarm went off, plumber was sent out by LA and they diagnosed a leaking flue..... Requiring boiler replacement. The boiler was a Worcester Bosch 24CDi (combi - natural gas) and I don't know how old it was but it certainly didn't seem…

IKEA Kitchen Applad or Abstrakt
Hi All, I have decided on an IKEA kitchen for a rental property (so please don't tell me they are rubbish and I should go elsewhere). I have been doing my research and I have read on US forums that the Applad doors can crack and look a mess quite quickly. To be safe I should go for the Abstrakt doors - but they are pricey.…

Victorian Terrace which walls are load bearing?
I have recently bought a Victorian Terrace which needs quite extensive renovation. On the list of jobs is the rear reception room which has poor natural light and no ventilation. (The previous owner built a side return extension in front of the window and original back of the house, blocking off light). I am making an…

Bathroom shower tab
My bathroom shower tab is too sensitive. A little turn is just too much. Wondering if this is just a thread issue or change the whole tab. It will be expensive to change the whole tab though.
