Opinion on Boiler Issue

Hello all,
I am currently renting a property, to cut a short-story to the quick... my CO alarm went off, plumber was sent out by LA and they diagnosed a leaking flue..... Requiring boiler replacement.

The boiler was a Worcester Bosch 24CDi (combi - natural gas) and I don't know how old it was but it certainly didn't seem that old, either way was told point blank "you'll never get parts for one of these old things now mate, that'll need the whole lot replacing..."

So, today the plumber has been (as requested by LA) and has started to fit a "Ferroli" boiler, which seems like something with lots of margin for the plumber but poor quality.... but I'm not a plumber I'm just guessing. The plumber has also changed all the radiator valves in the house?

Just a few questions:

1) Would it normally be expected to replace the radstats with a new boiler?

2) Was it really not possible to get the replacement flue section for the old boiler?

I'm slightly suspicious of the plumbers, they charged several hundred pounds and took twelve weeks to replace a shower cartridge I could have bought online, fitted myself and had delivered next day for £75 (retail)...

Any advice welcomed!

Regards,
Andy

Firstly, thank goodness you had a CO alarm fitted:eek:

Did the plumber (hopefully they are Gas Safe Registered) mention where the flue was leaking?

Changing all the radiator valves isn't required during a boiler change.

I'm sure the plumber is making a few bob for the extras!

 Firstly the person doing the job needs to be a Gas Safe registered and qualified engineer, NOT a plumber :(

As it is the Landlord who is going to be paying for this I don't think you will be able to have much influence, even if he is being ripped off, which he may well be, wrongly diagnosed fault, availability, cost, or what ever, but as its your safety thats at risk you DO NEED to check the qualifications issue ;) and you should expect a new LGSC(CP12, although this is just a reference number of the document, but is commonly used) when its completed, and the LL should get the necessary other paperwork!

There is legislation in respect of boiler changed these days and specifics about what has to actually be replaced and upgraded, Part L of the building regulations :)

For someone to attend a co alarm going off, they should hold the CMDDA qualification on top of all their other qualifications.

Ferolli are the biggest pile of poo out there I'm afraid

I gathered that, I can tell it's crap just by looking at it (and I'm not a gas engineer).

Can anybody "in the know" confirm whether they'd rip out a Worcester Bosch 24CDi with a broken flue to swap for one of these? - And whether it would be impossible to get any parts for the Worcester Bosch boiler?

I'm suspicious as Father-in-Law can still get parts for his old Concorde boiler?!

If it's one of the old cdi's then he may be correct & a new flue isn't available

is the installer just fitting what the LL has supplied ?

if the installer has recommended fitting a Ferroli, then i wouldn't trust him to make me a cup of tea let alone anything else

  • worcester still make parts for boilers that are donkeys years old. but for some reason most manufacturers tend to discontinue the flue system first so i would not be supprised if its not available.

Someone is being turned over. But the LL probably doesn't care. He'll write the cost off against his tax liability anyway.
