Laying quarry tiles outside
We replaced our horrid cheap pine floor (overlaid badly on concrete) with lovely 4 inch quarry tiles. The guy that did this was fantastic. So it runs the length of the hallway, out the front door to a step (front door replaced afterwards so seemless tiling). We now want to continue outside from the step to a gate.…

Covering up damp wall
I'm trying to do things to make living in my old rented cottage just that little bit pleasanter until hopefully I move next year. The roof above one of the rooms is leaking and while water isn't exactly pouring in, it is making that wall very damp with black streaks. When I painted it the emulsion remained wet enough to…

Splashback ideas please
Can anyone recommend a cheap way to provide a splashback for a wash handbasin? Its just for the immediate area above the sink. I'm not sure I trust my tiling skills and wondered if there was some sort of sheet of something we could fix to the wall that would keep the worst of the splashes off it. It's a rented house so I…

Want to learn how to plaster - Where Do I Go?
I am living in a private rented property and well, its borderline decent lol. I am not working as I have a child with special needs to look after (he keeps needing help with schooling even now) plus a five year old. I have made a couple of posts here about revamping the bathroom. Its your typical private rental bathroom..,…

Burglar alarm/ Home security
Hello, I am looking for a burglar alarm to put at home. I am not quite sure what I want yet so any advise would be much appreciated. I want to make a one off payment (so no "ADT type" maintenance), probably wired (I am thinking wireless will use a lot of battery) and right now I am starting to think that it would be nice a…

Stools for Breakfast Bar
Hi All, Can I start by thanking all of you who post regularly regarding kitchens. I've learnt so much and was able to go forward with a major project with a lot more confidence than I would otherwise have had. :j The final piece of our jigsaw is to replace our bar stools. I am looking for high backed, faux leather swivel…

Repairs to a house in probate?
Hi, I'm hoping someone out there might have an answer to this question. I'm a joint executor for a will which includes a house; we are still in the process of sorting out the paperwork before applying for Probate. The house is being left jointly to two beneficiaries, separate from the beneficiaries of the residue of the…

Planning portal smoke and mirrors.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems. My local Council always publish planning applications at a searchable website portal - it has always worked well - being able to view all associated documents for an application / applications going back many years. It was a very useful service. I have had cause to…

Pendant light replacement?
The Pendant light in our bedroom hasn't worked for few years since someone tried to fit a SBC bulb into a standard BC fitting and with a spark cut out the electric. The pendant fitting has been sunk into the plasterwork and then sealeds all around, so preferably I'd like to not have to touch the fitting itself. Is there…

Howdens units / integrated microwave
Hi, We're getting our new kitchen from Howdens, who have told us that they don't have wall units for integrated microwaves (they only have tower units for them). I was thinking of getting an ikea wall unit and using Howdens side panels and buying an integrated microwave separately. But I think the ikea wall unit is deeper…

Blinds or curtains - which do you prefer?
Title says it all really. We currently have nice vertical blinds in our (modern) rental flat and they're great, but will they look out of place in a 1930s home?

LG Direct Drive or Samsung Eco Bubble washer
After 5 years of Bosch and 10 years of Hotpoint we need a new washer and after looking around found that the champions of quietness and reliability now days are the Koreans with the above models. Can anyone who own any washers from the above brands with the above technologies can comment about real day to day usage?

When do I get the Howdens price?
We have had the designer out, I have a plan, we are going to see them next weekend to look at bits. Will they give me a price then, or will she send it to the builder who will then pass it on to me? (BTW they have suggested putting integrated WM in a 70/30 FF tower customised so it will house integrated WM below and boiler…

New WC on old style waste pipe
I'm having a bathroom refitted, and the original toilet bolts onto a soil pipe that emerges vertically from the floor. Modern WCs have an outlet that is horizontal so it will need a pan connector. The plumber says that this will mean the WC has to move forward about 4", and he will box in the back. Not a serious issue, but…
