two story side extension - roof pitch wrong way round
I'm looking at the possibility of a two story side extension to a detached house which has the gable end of the pitched roof facing the front. So the two story extension (single garage with utility room at back with bedroom and en-suite above) would have a similar but smaller pitched roof with a gully between the two.…

Prices look quite reasonable, I think, and wonder if anyone had used them and if they recommend them. Otherwise could anybody recommend a company to purchase a frameless shower screen…

Gaggenau Gas Hob Repair
Hi guys, I don't know the best place to put this, or even if there is a place to post this. My apologies if this in the wrong section. My parents had a Gaggenau Gas Hob fitted about 5-6 years ago. 4 burners, 2 on the left and 2 on the right. After 6 months or so, the 2 burners on the right side didn't work properly. As…

grit in water when running a bath?
I have had a bath fitted with a monobloc tap by my son in law. I find that when I run a bath, I am getting what looks like sand/grit coming through with the water. The water supply is from a new(ish) electric heater. No other taps hot or cold in the house suffer with the problem and all are fed from the same water heater…

Plumbing help.
Hi, I really hope someone can help me. My hot water tap on my bath seems to have little to no pressure. I can switch it on full and its fine for a couple of minutes and then it just turns to a dribble. I'll then turn the tap to half way and the pressure appears fine then the cycle repeats itself. Its really annoying as we…

P & L shaped shower baths & screens - leaking?
I'm currently doing up my bathroom, and deciding what shower-bath to get. I've seen a P-shaped shower bath in Wickes, with a screen that slides right around: http://www.wickes.co.uk/Two-Panel-Sliding-Shower-Bath-Screen-RH/invt/209160 This looks great, and it appears that it will not leak at all. It's expensive though -…

Refurbishing 2 bedroom flat. Advice on costs.
Hi, I am in the process of buying a 2 bedroom flat in London. It needs extensive modernisation / redecoration. Pretty much everything needs doing I would think. Originally, I was estimating that this would cost somewhere in the region of £10-15k. But having had a couple of quotes which are more than I expected, I am VERY…

Striped stair carpet
We're thinking of having a striped stair carpet, either fully fitted or as a runner. Does anyone else have striped carpet on their stairs, any pics? Its so hard to visualise the overall look. We've had the whole hall stairs and landing plastered and in the process of painting so need to get on with choosing the carpet. The…

Shower screen solution
Due to the generosity of my fantastic parents I'm currently looking at changing my bathroom suite. Unfortunately the window overhangs the bath by 3 inches which means a bath/shower screen can't be hung. Due to the size of the room there is no scope for changing the positioning of the suite or the wall on which the…

Part of house needs to be knocked down....
I live in a 1960's built semi, that had a toilet, utility room and shed in a separate flat roof building about 3 foot from kitchen back door. Its single skim bricks so when we wanted to connect it to main house we just added a wooden doorway at either side to make a connecting room, as the roof already went straight out…

Bannister...
...the oddest thing has happened. I have a long bannister above the stairwell. My son has just come to get me to show me that half a dozen of the uprights have suddenly fallen out. In the last half hour. And they're now too short for the gap. They're towards the centre of the long rail, and I can't help wondering whether…

Deep cleaning carpet tiles
I've just spent an enjoyable couple of hours out in the sunshine while 'karchering' the carpet tiles from my bedroom floor, which is about to be redecorated. I can't believe how many shades lighter they are now that they've been properly cleaned and can only assume that the yarn from which they are made (polypropylene?)…

Any building regs experts in the forum?
I'll keep this short as I'm sure more info will be needed. We are having a "wraparound" extension built on one corner of the house. We need to remove as much as possible of the back face of the corner to allow the new bit to blend with the old. What is the min safe bearing needed for the new lintels, this being standard…

Dulux Tile Paint Disaster
We recently tried to brighten up our grotty bathroom and didn't want to spend a whole load of money and in particular time on it as we are thinking of moving in the next year or so. It's an awkwardly shaped room and we have to have a tiled area around and behind the sink to bring it away from the back wall so it's at a…
