Bannister...

...the oddest thing has happened.
I have a long bannister above the stairwell. My son has just come to get me to show me that half a dozen of the uprights have suddenly fallen out. In the last half hour. And they're now too short for the gap.
They're towards the centre of the long rail, and I can't help wondering whether the rail has warped in this long dry spell. Though it's 20 years old-you'd think it would be dry already.
Any ideas how to go about fixing it? Please?

The handrail must be badly bowed for the spindles to have dropped out.
Apply some of this to the top and bottom of each loose spindle, use a clamp to close and straighten the handrail on to the spindles, leave in place for 24 hours until the glue sets. You might have to temporary screw a piece of 2x2 timber to the inner string of the stair to secure the clamp to.
Practice setting up the clamp before you glue anything.0 -
It might be worth checking that all of the others are correctly seated in their sockets. If one has become dislodged it could be pushing the handrail higher than it should be, causing the others to fall out. (Just a guess!)0

Any cracks in walls?
Just wondered if the house has 'moved' a little? Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

Thanks, everyone.
It's now fixed. My rather amazing dad improvised a prop between the ceiling and the rail to force the rail down, then screwed and glued. All I have to do is a bit of filling and repaint.
Whew.....
