Boiler quote but not VAT registered - Implications?
We've had a few boiler quotes but one of them made a point of telling us he's not VAT registered (and a big point of stressing his Gas Safe Register status!) as he's self-employed and doesn't employ anyone else. What are the implications on us if we have work done by a company not VAT registered?

New Shower Recommendations?
Further to our water leak outside being fixed, the water board turning the pressure off and on has now blown our electric shower!! When you turn it off the water still gushes out of it so I'm assuming it's beyond help! We're probably looking at spending up to £100 on a new one so I was wondering if anyone had any…

washing machine hot/cold setup
I have been given a washing machine and pipes, one for hot and one for cold. I have hot and cold connections. In the booklet it says it can be connected this way or both can be connected to the cold with a y-piece. Its no problem to connect it either way but would it make it more efficient by just connnecting to the cold???

Outside steps
I need to put in some steps up to my new French doors. We've got loads of bricks left from taking part of the wall out so we'd like to build the step part from bricks, with some decking boards across the top. My question is what to build it on. The people before us put down a patio of slabs, but they're not on anything,…

Please accept my apologies if this is in the wrong place. My mother has passed on to me 3 books from her late father-in-law. They are: 12000 Medical Words pronounced and defined, Gould 1895, The Annual Register, or a view of the History Politics, and Literature for the year1775 (which I found on Amazon for 150GBP :j. The…

Rented furnished flat about to become unfurnished
I'd really appreciate some advice. Myself and a friend moved into an unfurnished flat on a joint tenancy agreement almost a year ago. Our renewal is coming up and she has decided to not renew as she now wishes to live by herself again. Fair enough! However, when we moved in the flat was unfurnished and she has a house she…

Minimum size for a downstairs toilet
I would really like a downstairs toilet but the only place I could have it is in my hallway, to the side of the front door. The trouble is the space available is only about 74cm wide by about 150cm long (door would open out onto hallway). Is this too small?

Shower enclosure question
I'm trying to buy a new frameless recess shower enclosure but the problem is my recess is 950mm wide at the top and 960mm at the bottom but the 1000mm enclosures only have a tolerance to 960mm. Will I be able to squeeze another 10mm out of the enclosure? There's a screen in place now so I'm guessing there are screens out…

Ideas for the cheapest way of getting a washing machine from Liverpool to Swansea?

Basically my uncle is about to emigrate to New Zealand and as my washing machine has just died has said I can have his but I don't know what the cheapest way of getting it is! As he lives in Liverpool and I'm in Swansea I recon it'd be about £60 in…

Tiny bath! Should we move toilet or wall to fit bigger?
We have just moved into a sweet little bungalow and after all the box halling and unpacking I decided to take a well earned relaxing bath which wasn't as chilled as I had hoped because my knee caps were almost under my chin and I couldn't lay down into the water! When measured our bath length is 60" (152cm). Our actual…

Neighbours - garden fence damage
Hi, Please can anyone advise? 1) My neighbours have drilled 2 planks of wood into my closeboard fence, and have nailed industrial type nails into it, with strong coated rope attached - in order to secure a white tent in their garden. The tent will probably be there for *at least* 3-4 months. I am very unhappy about this…

double glazing hinge repair?
Hi, We are looking at buying a house, and all the windows seem fine, except 2 of the upstairs bedrooms, part of each window is badly rusted and stiff. I don't know the name of the part, it's not the hinge as you would see on a door...the window has two bits that open on each side (so not at top) and they open outwards so…
