VAX vs Rug Doctor

Hi, i am in the middle of deciding which to use, a rug doctor which i have to hire and use in a limited time or to buy a vax heated carpet cleaner on offer for £149(6yr warranty) to use as and when i need to, has anyone used both types and had a better result from one than another, thanks

But do the Bissell recon ones come with a 6 year warranty?

I have the Vax and in my opinion its really not up to much ! Not tried Rug Doctor so can't comment on them, but they do look more up to the job !

As Andy says, Bissel are the way forward. 6 year warranty is fine, but wouldnt you rather have the superior cleaning for however long the Bissel lasts for? My Bissel is still going strong and the build quality is 100 times better than my Vax vacum cleaner.

Rug Doctor is the one to go for but they are expensive, around the £400 mark.

I have had a VAX and Bissel and they don't clean the carpets anywhere near the Rug Doctor but then there's the price difference.

The VAX and Bissel machines aren't built to last and made from cheap parts.

The Rug Doctor is a robust machine. Also with the VAX and Bissel you have to go back and forth with the machine whereas the Rug Doctor is a single pass machine.

I'm very pleased with the Rug Doctor.

I have been pondering the same question as the OP for a few weeks now, i have decided to hire a rug doctor, having used a vax rapide in the past (borrowed) i was not impressed, maybe the bissell machines are better than vax but i cannot comment as i have never used a bissell.
I was in B&Q and one of the staff was telling me she had used a rug doctor in her home and said it was superb much more superior to a vax and got her carpets like brand new.
By looking at the rug doctor machine and reading info it seems to be much more up for the job than a vax.

Another vote for Bissel. We've had ours for around 12 years now, and it gets quite a lot of use due to a combination of messy pets and messy kids ! It's paid for itself many times over compared to the cost of hiring a machine, and I love the convenience - if something gets spilt, or you just decide the carpet needs a clean, you can do it when it's convenient. No messing around with hiring one then rushing to do the job in an afternoon.

Never used a rug doctor, but I'm quite prepared to believe it's a better machine. But the Bissel does absolutely fine for us, and for the price I can't fault it.

I borrowed a Vax from a friend and it did indeed clean the carpets in the sense that the water that I emptied out of the reservoir was filthy. I didn't think much of the smell it left behind, but the person has dogs and I think I introduced some dog smell into my house. Since everything dried, though, it's been fine. We were sure glad to have it the day my son spilled butternut squash soup on the beige carpet!

We're thinking of buying one after my daughter spilt the same kind of soup a week or so ago, and now we've got an orange stain we can't remove.

However, I'm not sure I'd buy a Vax. Though it cleans the rug, ish, it definitely doesn't get any stains out.

My friend hired a Rug Doctor and said it got stains out of her carpet. I'm just not sure I can justify £400 vs. £200.

That's a lot of weekend rentals!

Can you do upholstry with the rug dr? and it looks heavy in the pictures, is it easy to do the stairs?

Hire the one with the stairs attachment (it was a bit more than the cheapest one when I did it), then leave the big machine at the bottom, ad you do with an upright vacuum cleaner. My Mum, sister, a friend and I shared a weekend hire.
