Boiler quote but not VAT registered - Implications?

We've had a few boiler quotes but one of them made a point of telling us he's not VAT registered (and a big point of stressing his Gas Safe Register status!) as he's self-employed and doesn't employ anyone else. What are the implications on us if we have work done by a company not VAT registered?
MFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.

you wont have to pay VAT!0

So maybe they'll find another way to transfer these costs...
I guess what I'm really trying to say is... it seems legit with regards to reading up on direct.gov and HMRC... but does it affect any guarantee or rights should there be a fault?MFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.0 -

Good morning: What are your concerns? If a sole trader is under the VAT threshold then he/she is not required to register for VAT. You will not be charged VAT on labour. Many tradespersons are not VAT registered and this does not suggest that their trading activities and standard of work are suspect...my OH has never been VAT registered (plumbing/gas)..we've appeared to have crossposted;)

Your quote should be cheaper!0

Yes, you won't pay VAT. May be that the guy only works part-time, or part of the year so he doesn't pass the threshold for VAT registeration as a prev poster said. Or he does a lot of work on the qt, cash in hand, say no more about it. Either way, doesn't necessarily reflect his workmanship. If in douby, ask him for contact details of his previous client and ask them how he got on. Best of all, go for a recommended guy. Not always, but usually better than flicking thru the yellow pages.0

I would be more concerned if he had said he would want cash payment, but no one is obliged to register for VAT if they are turning over less than the 68K threshold.
How can it possibly affect the guarantee? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Basically he is under the VAT threshold which is if your sales are under £68,000 in the last 12 months.
As people have said it won't have any affect on his workmanship (good or bad!)0 -
he must be a part time plumber if hes not doing 68k per annum!Get some gorm.0

Quite the contrary... I actually thought he was very good. We've had three previous quotes and each of them has flagged up a different potential problem and how they'll solve it (condenser pipe linked to drain pipe, gas pipe going outside etc.). But he spotted all three of these and inspected the atic/outside further to solve them, so I thought he was very thorough. Just left me slightly suspicious that he'd leave on that note... like he hadn't wanted to mention it sooner.
Also he mentioned the two most popular boiler makes recommended on this siteMFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.0 -
My other half was a painter and decorator for over 40 years and was not VAT registered. He got lots of work just because he wasnt registered as the quotes he gave didnt have an extra 17.5% on them for VAT.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
