Boiler quote but not VAT registered - Implications?

We've had a few boiler quotes but one of them made a point of telling us he's not VAT registered (and a big point of stressing his Gas Safe Register status!) as he's self-employed and doesn't employ anyone else. What are the implications on us if we have work done by a company not VAT registered?

Basically you'll save on the cost of VAT on his labour, and any mark-up he charges on the parts he supplies. He'll still be paying VAT on the items he buys to do your job (pipe, boiler, cable, etc), which will just be passed on to you in his costs.

As above, no problem with all this and should make no odds on the job he does or its legality.
