To tile or not to tile? (kitchen)
Am having a galley style kichen with hob and sink on opposite sides. Want to avoid tiling all round. I've found lovely (but pricey) glass splashbacks. Is it enough just to have 2 big splashbacks behind the sink and hob with the rest of walls being painted or am I missing something?

Help - can't get sofas out of front door
Got new sofas coming on Saturday but since I bought the old ones in 2001, I've changed my front door and now I can't get the old ones out, let alone get the new ones in! The only solution I can think of is to take the door off - but it's a uPVC double glazed one with some swanky locking system. Has anyone done this and if…

Flooring help please? Quotes for tiles / laminate
Hi we are considering getting our long narrow hall and kitchen tiled. It is in total 19m2. We were quoted for the reasonably square 9m2 kitchen £262 and £ 300 for the 10m2 hallway which is long and narrow. This works out at around £30 per m2. This is for labour and adhesive and grout. Alternatively we were thinking of…

Terracotta floor tiles
Does anybody have any experience with sealing terracotta floors? We've laid terracotta in our bathroom and I'm beginning to wish we hadn't. We sealed the tiles before laying them with an impregnating sealer, which we had to do otherwise the grout would have sunk in as they are very porous. Now we need to put on some sort…

Storage heaters - disposal
Just wondered if anyone knew whether there were organisations which might appreciate (fully functioning) storage heaters? I have listed them on both freecycle and gumtree, but after having no fewer than 6 separate people arrange to come pick them up and then not turn up (after my waiting in each time) , I have pretty…

UPVC Door - Repair or Replace?
How easy is it to repair a UPVC door? We moved into a new house a few months ago and the back door is a bit tatty but with all the other things that need doing we didn’t see it as a priority. The door has a clear glass panel in the top half and a UPVC panel in the bottom half. Can this panel be replaced as there is an…

Is there one brand of home appliances that is "better" than the rest?
I am about to exchange/complete on my first home and as such I need to buy all white goods. Is there one brand that is reliable and well priced? I have heard Baumatic is good - does anyone agree or disagree? Also, I am probably going to buy from the Coop Electrical shop online - it will probably end up costing in excess of…

Smoke or steam coming from washing machine?
When I removed clothes from my washing machine this morning after running a Spin cycle I noticed "vapour" coming from the open door. I'm unsure whether it was steam or smoke. It disappeared after a minute and although I couldn't smell smoke my OH thought he could. How can I check? I've never noticed steam coming out…

They’re also abusive towards him whenever he tries to…

Sticky label residue
I've removed a sticky label from a new silver microwave but the glue won't come off with water and washing up liquid. I know that white spirit easily removes glue but I'm reluctant to use it in case it ruins the surface of the microwave. Any suggestions please?

repainting doors
In our flat (built in the 1980s) we have some cheap internal doors. Hollow and just a dark brown colour. I have looked at changing them and they are not a normal size. So it would be a lot of work and money to change them. So how hard is it to repaint? would they need to be sanded down to bare wood then primed sanded and…

Best Material for Construction in Bathroom
I need to put a small false wall in the bathroom. The area concerned is about 6ft x 4ft. The pipes will be hidden behind it, and it will be tiled over. A small sink will be hung from the wall, although that could be mounted through to the solid wall behind. The false wall does need to support taps though. What is a good…
