Help - can't get sofas out of front door

Options
Got new sofas coming on Saturday but since I bought the old ones in 2001, I've changed my front door and now I can't get the old ones out, let alone get the new ones in!

The only solution I can think of is to take the door off - but it's a uPVC double glazed one with some swanky locking system. Has anyone done this and if so, how easy was it?

I am at my wit's end thinking about how to solve this problem. I live in a terraced house with no rear access so can't get them through the patio doors at the back of the hosue unfortunately.

Help!

you might have to phone up the original company that put the doors in and ak them if they can tak them out and put back for you (or find someone local who can do it properly)

I spoke to them and they said if I took them off, it might be OK but it might not lock properly when I put it back on and if that happens, they will have to re-set them for about £75.

The problem is that I don't know what time the sofas are coming so I can't arrange for anyone to come out and do it for me as they might have to be hanging around for hours - so I think we will need to do it ourselves.

    It's really stressing me out.

Do you have a patio door?

You could get them out and in that way.

    Help!

i hope you have measured the new sofa's to see if they will fit through the door.
i had similar problem where the sales guy measured sofas for me to fit the size of my walls and he made mistake so they wouldnt fit.
but the sofa company still wanted to charge me for the sofa even though i couldnt accpet it !!!

i stuck to my guns spoke to head office and i was not charged .... but it was a real headache !

i have also heard of these companies just leaving sofa's on front lawns as its not there problem !

    good luck !

do you have a window in the room which they are going to go in ?
do you have a upvc window as they are very easy to remove the beads from and I know a few people who have had to do it this way and works a treat .
either that or just deliver them to me !!!!!!!!!!!!

I do have patio doors, but there is no access to the back of my house as I have a walled garden - the wall is about 10 feet high with a car yard at the back (I could get access to the car yard but I don't know how the sofas would get over the wall).

I didn't measure the sofas as I thouht they were roughly the same size as my old ones - I've had five sofas in and out before, all pretty big, although I used to have an ordinary wooden door which wasn't as thick.

There is a window but I assumed removing it would be quite difficult and expensive?
  • Can you dismantle the old sofa's ?

or cut them up if you are dumping them.

what type do u have coming ?

as recliners normally have removable backs which free's up a lot of space in hallway.

That's the problem with upvc doors. The frames are larger and the doors smaller.

My new neighbours used Pickfords to move them. Their sofa wouldn't go through the front door either, but Pickfords had a kit in their van, had the door off in a trice, sofa went through and they rehung the door.
They told my neighbour it happens a lot which is why all their vans have a kit of tools to take off and rehang doors.

As kingrobert said, if you have a large double glazed window in the front of the house it is possible (with some kinds, not all) to pull off the beading and remove the whole glass window unit carefully.

My old windows were removed this way before fitting the new ones. First they took off the beading, then they popped the glass out, then they took out the old frame. The picture window was very large and would have been very heavy for them to lift the whole thing out in one go.

Have a search on the net for info on how to do it. It looks fairly simple. Just be very careful not to damage the seals around the window unit or the window will fail.
