Smoke or steam coming from washing machine?

When I removed clothes from my washing machine this morning after running a Spin cycle I noticed "vapour" coming from the open door. I'm unsure whether it was steam or smoke. It disappeared after a minute and although I couldn't smell smoke my OH thought he could. How can I check? I've never noticed steam coming out before, but I had the kitchen door open and cool air was coming into the kitchen so wonder if steam is a normal process after spinning and I've never noticed it before. If it was smoke, what do I do if I run the machine next time and experience smoke?

Errrrrr turn it off at the socket unplug it and call an engineer out ?????0 -
Its not normal to have steam coming out and smoke well its even more worrying. Check the rubber seal on the door is it ok? Don't use the machine and leave it unchecked if there is a fault it could burn your house down.0

The service engineer called yesterday and could find nothing wrong with it. However when he ran it on a test cycle and it produced the big bangs for him too, so it's been condemned to the big metal heap in the sky.
More bl**dy expense for a replacement. Still, it was 12 years old so we've probably had reasonable value from it.0
