Treating knots in wood
We've just had a knotty pine glass panelled door fitted and I'm keen to get it painted white gloss asap. What type of thing is knot treatment? we don't have any so I was wondering if we could improvise with anything just to make a start on it. We've got stuff like PVA and stain block lying around as well as white primer…

Drilling a wall to pass cables through...
Hi there, I need to get cables (electrical/Ethernet) into a room from another. I saw the guy who installed my satellite dish use this large drill tip to drill the wall from the outside of the house, I thought I'd do the same for internal walls and I equipped myself with a long tip for the purpose. Walls seem easy to…

Solar panels
Hi, Just wondered - apart from the obvious benefit to the environment are solar panels viable in the UK as a cost cutting exercise? On an average semi-detatched house how long does it take to get a decent Return On Investment? Just wondered if any members had any experiance with this? Cheers, worto.

Advice needed on buying a Front Door
We need a new front door but are fairly clueless as to what to get and how much it should cost. We were thinking a wooden one may be better (unless anyone thinks otherwise?), but how does everything get fitted (like the letter box and locks?). Is it better to buy all the components and get a carpenter to fit it, or go to a…

Where to put a loft hatch
Our new mid-terrace house has no loft hatch at all. Best guess at building date is 1890. Is there a best place to try and put one? (I'm thinking about going straight for a loft ladder) Can anyone tell me what we're likely to find up there? (in terms of layout, insulation etc not ghosts in the attic :) )

My year old kitchen
My year old kitchen has lots of niggly little things that have gone wrong. The latest is that at the same time, the ends of the units have come undone. help! draughty door!
We have got an internal garage with a door leading to the house. The garage door itself is one of those electric roller types that has huge gaps at the side where the garage door frame attaches to the brickwork, and also between each of the corrugated sections of the door itself - so basically not really wind proof. The…
