Being pursued for a "debt" for which I was never billed correctly
Long story, but here's the short(ish) version: EDF took months to recognise me as a customer and as a result wouldn't let me access anything cheaper than their standard tariff. Only when I approached the Ombudsman (in April) did they offer me a discount. I accepted this, changed suppliers, and on 2nd June got a "final…

how to run fridge and freezer at max efficiency?
I've recently received an energy monitor and am already addicted to my new 'toy' and have spent the day taking readings and generally flicking light switches to log the difference in consumption. I've have already had a 'light bulb' moment (ES of course!). Both my fridge and freezer (old and basic models) are turning…

978KwH usage for electricity - is this good?
I'm a 28 year old in a mid-sized to 3 bed semi-detached house, living alone. From the actual figures I've updated with NPower (which came out cheapest for my usage) they are estimating I will use 978kwH over a full year. I just wondered if this was about average for a single person, or low, or high? I do have the TV on for…

Gas fire v CH
Would anyone be able to make an educated guess on the following. I keep my CH on 24/7 on 16 - 18. We boost it to 18 in the evening purely for comfort and turn down to 16 for bed. Our boiler is about 14 years old so unlikely to be super efficient. Our 4 bed house is well insulated and our winter bills are normally very…

Electricity Prepayment Meter Charge
Hi everyone, I have a query, if anyone can help it would be great. My wife had a phonecall last night telling us how we were getting on with the bill we'd ran up 4 years ago. We were a little gobsmacked as we'd thought the bill was paid and didn't know we were paying it off. We'd never had any confirmation of any payment…

Iberswitch in Spain
Don't know if Martin is aware but his picture and quotes have been used by a company called Iberswitch in today's edition of a free English newspaper, (Round the Town News or RTN) published on the Costa Blanca . They say they are the largest energy switching company in Spain - well they would say that as they're the only…

Heating on all day in house vs electric heater in single room switched on when needed
Hi all, I work from home all day approx half the week. My question is, what would be cheaper in energy costs: a) heating on all day, throuhgout the house, on around 20 degrees b) heating off (or very low) and switch on a small electric fan heater for a blast of warm air every 30-60 mins to warm up the home office I work…

Surprised at my gas usage
Checking my last two Scottish Power bills and helpfully it shows a bar graph to compare the same periods now and a year ago. My daily gas usage has fallen from 71kwh to 36 kwh for October and 67kwh to 41kwh so far this month. Electricity has been fairly static - just a touch lower. The power of loft insulation!

first:utility ignored cancellation
I picked first:utility for a gas/el switch from my previous suppplier by using a comparison site recommended here. They sent me an email with their actual tariff and when I worked it out by hand it wasn't going to be cheaper than what I had. Decided to cancel within 7 days by speaking to one of their phone operators. She…

British Gas Standing Charge
Hi All I'm looking for some advice please, or even to find if this is happening to anyone else. I run a small business, not easy in the current climate, and have been in my premises for over 15 years. When we 1st moved in there was a gas heater which didn't suit our needs so our gas usage became zero and for many happy…

NPower Letter Received
I received a letter from NPower's creditors, chasing an outstanding payment of £710. This was apparently outstanding from the last four months of my tenancy in a flat. The wierd thing is, I have never been a customer of NPower. In the flat in question I was with Scottish Power, which I have proof of as they took £95 a…

Resetting clock on Ampy Type 5184A meter?
Hi all This has drifted over time so that it is now about twenty minutes out. Is there a way of resetting it to correct time without going through whoever installed it? I presume this is not a smart meter and will need replacing in the future. It is dual rate meter i.e. Economy Seven. Thanks for any help. :j Regards, Steve

Can anyone please tell me how I would know if I am on Imperial units or Metric on my gas meter, my meter itself has 4 white digits and one red and a gauge with ft mark on it. My reason for asking is at the end of last year I had a bill for over a thousand pounds, when I looked into the bill I was told it was because I had…

EDF - a different problem
So , went to login to myaccount (the one that has worked for over 5 years) and it says " Apologies. Our records indicate that you do not have any active accounts" If I put a wrong pin no in it tells me that username or password is incorrect so that implies I am on the system. Could someone with the old style myaccount try…

Social contracts for utility supplies
I don't know if this subject has been discussed but most suppliers offer social contracts for customers who receive a form of benefits - this often offers supplies under standard charges. We saved over £20 per month by signing uo to Scottish Powers' Fresh Start social contract. I also feed in meter readings on line monthly…

Outstanding Dispute with Npower-advice please
Hello, Can anyone please help me, I moved out of a standard 3 bedroomed house in August 2011, while there I was with Npower and paying direct debit. Over the last year I paid £1222.00 for both gas and electric in payments, but Npower sent me a final bill saying I owe £300.16 gas and £352.45 electric, making a debt of…
