New Alcohol self help

Options
Hi, my name's Lewt and I am a Recovered alcoholic

I have started a new thread as the other was locked. I hope I don’t get banned for doing so, but I think this thread has really helped me at times and others too.

Alcoholics anonymous http://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk/

National Helpline: 0845 769 7555

EDITED 2.11.08

I have seen so many posts from partners so here is what the book i recovered from has in it, the title of the chapters is "to wives" however the word wife is changable to husband, partner, son, daughter etc. well worth a read.

http://www.healtalk.com/public/Chapter-8.shtml

Habibi has asked me to post Al-Anon details for reference in this first post:

Useful info:

Al-Anon Family Groups:-
Help for family and friends of problem drinkers:

Tel: 020-7403 088 (10am - 10pm, Monday to Friday)
E-mail: enquiries@al-anon.org.uk
Website: www.al-anonuk.org.uk

I saw the other thread has been closed, I should think it has something to do with the events that unfolded in the last few days.
I hope this one can be used better than the last.

We're all here to either find help or give help, please be aware that this is a public forum and anyone can see your posts and private message you.

It is not recommended that private messaging take place 1) because still drinking alcoholics can become emotionally hooked on 1 person and if that person goes relapse is a lot more possible and 2) if you are posting for help there could be someone just reading to frighten to post that may have the same or similar problem and in your asking/discussing you could help them.

If PM'in does take place can I suggest that it be man to man or woman to woman.

Please feel free to post any questions you may have either to me or any other regular posters.

Can I also ask that any issues that are from the old thread and not alcohol related please be posted elsewhere lets leave sleeping threads lie hey?

if anyone has any ideas as to anything else needed for the first post we'll sort it out. I hope that covers all.
If i upset you don't stress, never forget that god aint finished with me yet.

Thanks for the new thread Lewt. As the battery from the smoke alarm has conked out and the beeping has woken me up fully, I`ll be the first to respond.
Just to clarify really. If you are worried about the drinking of a family member then Al-anon is the place to go. If you are worried about your own drinking then many of us (inc me) will recommend trying AA. You may decide that it`s not for you, but please give it a try first.
At a meeting last week, I met 2 people who had been sober for 22 years. And I`ve met a 30 year man previously. It is possible - one day at a time.

  • Hi everyone

Feel free to carry on helping each other out on here. Despite recent events the past threads have been a great help for many people and it would be a huge shame to see that end.

    Take care everyone

I would just like to thank the mse team for allowing an alcohol thread to continue on these forums, and i hope that many other people continue to benefit in whatever shape or form, from this thread, as i personally drew great strength from the original thread.

once again, thank you team xx

Wicked thanks folks! if anyone would like me to add anything to the first post let me know, lets make this our thread,

Just so you all know i'm a year clean and sober as of the 2nd of august. :T

It's gone so fast considering that i could never go a few hours without a drink.

I never found the threads here while i was drinking. i wish i had as theres people here with different ammounts of clean time and also people that have done their soberity in a different way to me ie not in treatment. thats not to say i dont thank god every day that i went to the treatment centre i did. its just if i'd known about the support here i could have maybe found the solution quicker.. i had months of knowing i couldnt stop but not knowing what to do i had tried all known options to me. in the end i went through the first 9 steps of the 12 step program and cleaned up the wreackage of my past and i now pratise 10 11 and 12 on a daily basis.

And this has worked for me in fact my life has changed so much since i learnt the solution.

Any way feel free to ask me anything i will answer as honestly as i can.

i am really gratefull to MSE for allowing this thread to continue. thanks!

  • Grateful thanks from me too for allowing this thread. I found the original a couple of years ago. Thanks to this site for giving me the options I didn't know existed, I am now 7 months sober.

  • I went to the Priory for one week to detox and then have been with Alcoholics Anonymous ever since. I don't have a belief in God, but I have faith in a higher power - the group that is AA was my first higher power.

I'm a slow learner, but I'm grateful for the help and support I've received from AA and I would recommend it.

I would say to anyone who wants to stop drinking to try AA - listen to what's being said and take what you can that makes sense and ditch the rest. Just keep going and it will make sense and it's not a cult or religion.
