My husband and I are drinking too much but we are a bit stressed at the moment because we are about to move house (unless the person we are buying off delays us yet again!).

We don't drink during the day and certainly not in the morning (although we have a bottle of red with Sunday lunch!) But we can't seem to sit down and relax in the evening without a drink. I have four or five vodkas or malibu's and he has four or five cans of beer (sometimes pint cans). We have vowed to stop and only drink at weekends once we have moved but I think its going to be quite difficult to kick the habit.

    Any advice would be welcome.

It all depends on weather you can stop if you want to. I couldnt i needed help and i also have found that in AA. i wanted to to stop and was ready to do anything to do so.

Do you both want to stop?

It is very common for people to turn to alcohol as a means of escapism or stress relief when going through difficult times....it does not mean you are an alcoholic or have a severe alcohol problem. But, it can become habitual...as you have said, you now find it hard to relax without those few drinks each evening.
When the move is complete, how about setting some ground rules for the new house? Dont bring drink into the house except at weekends, maybe find another way to unwind at the end of the day (gym, cinema etc...anything you both enjoy that doesnt revolve around alcohol), put the money you would have spent on drinks into a jar and decided on something nice you would both like to spend it on when the jar is full (other than alcohol of course!)...the price of 5 vodkas and 5 cans a night soon adds up!!

If after a few weeks you find that you are breaking the 'rules' and still drinking more than you are happy with....then have a think about getting some help and advice. Your doctor, local health centre or AA will be able to give you support and guidance as to how to cut down. Going to an AA meeting does not mean you have declared yourself a raging alkie who drinks meths from a brown paper bag!!.....it is there for anyone who thinks their drinking has become problematic.

I am going away for a few days and wont have computer access...but if you fancy a chat in the future just let me know.
Good luck to you both ;)

hi Lewt, got on fine ,less than the night before BUT the weekend is going to be hard, rock gig tonight, see how it goes.

At this point i would say that i am using harm reduction as my model working towards going alcohol free when the dt's are not in play as i have no meds.

    pleased with the progress though
