Cat with poorly tummy (I have added some pics of him!!)

This is probably in the wrong place but

I have a new cat, from RSPCA and he has a upset tummy, does anyone know the best way to deal with this?

He is currently eating plain cooked chicken and dry biccies and water.

thanks

Lou and Rusty :-)

Remove the dry biccies from the equation :)

Stick with boiled chicken and fish for a couple of days until it settles down. More likely than not it's just the stress of a new home and a change of food. In a day or two when his tummy settles down add a little dry food to his dinner, then a little more each day till no chicken.
If in a day or two there is no change take the kitty to the vet, there could be an underlying problem that needs to be looked at. And if the cat has diarea then make sure you keep an eye on the cats hydration levels.

I second tine's advice re cutting out the dry food, but I would also urge you to find out about the worming history. I imagine the RSPCA worm them before rehoming but particularly for a young cat it would be worth repeating this anyway, with something like Profender or Drontal.

he is 8 years old and has quite happily made himself at home. I gave him just chicken 2nite and he seems to still be hungry!! licking his empty bowl and meowing at me!! ahhh poor boy!

also my other little girl cat is SO scared of him, he just went near her and she is now hiding on to p of my fridge freezer. Im so worried about her (he just wants to sniff her and is not agressive at all) she is just SO scared of him (even tho she has always lived with older boy cats) I dont know what to do to help them get on.

I'd say it was the stress of a new home too. Our cats had tummy trouble for a week when we moved house. Once they were settled and familiar with the new house they were fine.
  • Please don't worry about your little girly, she will be just fine, it's always difficult to introduce a new cat into an established household, My Mum and Dad eventually ended up with 10, nearly 1 per year from 1987, it always took it's time.

Thing is make sure new cat is secure and happy as well as your girl and try to introduce a little at a time - supervised - keep making a fuss of your girl and let her know she is boss, even if this means shutting the newbie away for a litle stretch at a time and giving her your one to one

re - upset tummy, again leave out dried food and check with RSPCA what they fed, was it same brand, also, a little scrambled egg (with water) can help to "bind them up!!"

    Hi
You could try Hills I/D you may need a consultation at the vet to get some, but they might be happy to give you some samples . Failing that Royal Canin sensible 33 is great for sensitive tums.

Your girly will be fine eventually :) As others have said then introduce gradually :) I have 2 cats who are litter mates and even they still don't always get on and they have never been seperated in 6 years!
Whenever I have fosetered kittens (even a 6 day old rejected kitten) the only reaction I got from my two was hissing, spitting and running as far away from the kitten as possible... charming! I only emergency foster so it's not been a problem but the dog still gets the occasional swipe across the nose ;)

Double worming the cat won't hurt it so might be worth doing that and the same for your girl whilst you're at it. A little scrambled egg won't harm it either so long as it's plain egg - no milk or butter or oil! - but I would personally stick to plain boiled chicken for a few days :) Just remember to feed yoru little girly the same or she'll not be happy and you never know what nasty presents you might find ;)

thanks all. I have got him seperated - he sleeps in our spare room and has his litter tray etc in there so he feels secure. He has made himself at home from day one!! In the day time I have seperated the house so he has upstairs and she has downstairs where her bed, food etc is and access to garden etc.

each evening for a couple of hours I have got her in and opened up the whole house so they both have run of the entire house. She sit and cried by teh cat flap and hisses at him whenever he goes near her. He is not bothered about her at all. Last nite I found her hiding on top of our fridge freezer with him meowing at her!! Very stressful. She does get quite stressed so I give her treats (he doesnt even look at the treats and isnt interested!) to distract her and calm her down. I have done this for 4 nites now and she still wont go near him!

I hope they start getting on soon as its making me more stressed than the pair of them!! LOL

ps. How do i post a pic on here - I have a lovely pic of him if you wanna see it!

They will get on, just give them some time. Our new kitten, now 7 months old, was universally hated by our 16 yr old and 2 2 yr olds, but they're knocking along just fine, now.

Good idea for tummy upsets is to starve them for 24 hours, just giving water, then introduce pain chicken or white fish, and pain boiled rice (protein and carbohydrate) for a few days until things settle down. If kitty is prone to tummy upsets or seems to have a delicate stomach, a complete cat food rather than tinned stuff is a good idea.

when my kitten had an upset tummy, the vet recommended we feed him scrambled egg, a little chicken and plain boiled rice. The cat was very put out about it, but it helped him over a day or two.

    Hope that helps!
