Their is a rumour circulating from within O2 that they will shortly start charging older contract holders (prior to 27/4/2007) for calls to these non geographical numbers.

Has anybody else heard about this, can anybody throw more light on the matter? Anybody working for O2 care to comment?

Their site http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/specialnumbers still says

"The 20p/min rate applies on all Pay Monthly plans where customers have connected or upgraded from 27 April 2007 onwards, and calls to these numbers are not included in bundle minutes for these plans. Customers who have connected or upgraded to a Pay Monthly plan before April 27 will be charged as for standard UK landlines (01 & 02 numbers)."

Yes, I have heard the same things - from CPW O2, - but its just word of mouth, rather than seeing anything in writing.

When I took out a new O2 contract with CPW, I called their customer services to enquire about whether NGN's were still included, as sales at e2save had told me.
I was told: "yes, until text messages are sent out in October, and charges come in at the beginning of November".
I was also told that "CPW are still fighting to keep these numbers free, but the network is telling us that charges have to come in" - to which I replied "good" !!

Having accepted that this was the position for my new contract, I sought assurance that my old contracts would not be affected. "Oh no, they will be charged too" I was told.

When I quoted the information on the O2 website that l3ond detailed above, I was told they knew nothing about this, but that it would affect all O2 users.

The lady added for good measure: "I have a contract with O2 that has been running for 5 years, but that IS ALREADY BEING CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS".
She was adamant that it will affect all O2 users.

As I said above this is all word of mouth, and like l3ond I can find nothing on the O2 website to confirm this, but it certainly seems to be a very strong rumour indeed - unfortunately. angry.gifangry.gifangry.gif

Any thought?

If indeed true then existing customers (like with orange) could possibly get out of their contracts without having completed their minimum term.

Now here is a thought, take out a o2/cpw contract (I believe some of these still included non-geo numbers 0845 and 0870) with a good phone, use the phone/contract for the period so when the notice (text and letters) go out you have grounds to cancel due to excessive increase in charges. Cancel the contract and you keep the phone with only really one/two month's worth of contract to pay.

That said its a risk as you would be going on a rumour.
    ummm...
  • g33za, i have to disagree with you their matey.

o2 will have a clause in the t&c which states they can change/add or remove charges as they say fit aslong as they give 14 days notice

Im an o2 customer and i ring those numbers alot so this sucks :(

Even if any such condition existed in their T&Cs, it would not be enforcible.

  • Believe me, Vodafone did the same thing with MMS and Data charges recently, the T&C clause made it possible and customers wern't able to cancel without fee or get anything to replace it without paying.
  • Contract law doesn't permit T&Cs to contain open ended clauses that allow unlimited changes.

orange did this (twice) with 07744 and people were able to cancel their contracts (i did), i'm sure there was something similar with 07744 and o2 at the time.. but i cant remember exactly as most people with o2 that used 07744 could use a 0844 instead so perhaps at the time didnt cancel.

Edit: according to here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=2596283&#post2596283 people were able to cancel, but i guess you have to really make an issue to get a result.
    ummm...
  • The change being made though isn't as huge so therfore the clause would hold.

    Heres Vodafones T&C, Clause 7a

    a) We reserve the right to increase/decrease our charges from time to time and/or introduce new charges from time to time. If we increase/decrease our charges, we will give you at least 14 days' prior notice.

  • aww but o2 have something totally different, if they do change it we are allowed to cancel

8.4(c) you are a Consumer Customer and we increase charges for calls, messages or
data that form part of your inclusive allowance or your Line Rental Charges or
change this Agreement to your significant disadvantage in accordance with
paragraph 9.2 of the General Terms, provided you give us a minimum of 30 days’
written notice (and provided you notify us within one month of our telling you
about the changes). This does not apply where the increase or change relates solely
to Additional Services in which case you may cancel, or stop using, that Additional
    Service.
    FULL T&C - http://www.o2.co.uk/assets/O2HybridNav/Static-files/PDFs/newcontract.pdf

Unless they classify 08 calls as an additional service then we cant.

i work for O2 Online, just read that from Sept 28th 2007, all tariffs (existing and new) will have 08/05/06 calls excluded from their allowance, but good news is within 30 days of the change you can cancel your contract early due to it being a change of Terms and Conditions
