Car Insurance for Young Drivers (2006)

Options
Thought I would share my happiness.

I've known for the last few weeks that I would be purchasing my first car after taking an intensive course and my passplus over December/January.

Bought my instructor's R reg Mitsubishi Colt 1.3 (insurance group 5 i think) which he used to drive before joining AA driving school (new car every 6 months).

Checked insuresupermarket and confused excessively and found easymoney.com (same company as Easyjet, underwritten by Zurich) the cheapest by far at £590 . Thats comprehensive insurance, £100 voluntary excess, £200 young driver excess, no courtesy car.

Was happy with that quote as I couldn't seem to find lower anywhere. All over quotes were £850-1500.

One hour before I was to buy the car I did some checking on insuremarket and thought I would phone some more insurers on the list. I found broker Screentrade and thought I'd give them a ring.

They offered me £481! (through insurer NIG) I refused to believe that and asked her to repeat the details. All legit and they offered the courtesy car and £50 less excess compared to easymoney. They even said they would waive the £15 charge to change my address in 6 months because I told them on start date.

I'm 23, brand new driver with passplus. Insurance group 5 car, R reg. Social + commuting. 6k annual mileage (£20 more for 10k). No drive/garage. No security on car.

Surely a record???? thanks MSE for recommending insuremarket. I personally find it better than confused.com except for the fact confused.com lets you select passplus as an option.

well done, my 18 year old future brother-in-law has just got his first car, a L reg Fiesta 1.3LX insured fully comp and that cost £1300 though zurich, so you got a good deal.
P.s i remember you asking a few weeks back some advice about your car, did you get a good deal for it in the end?

hiya mike. Thanks for the advice again.

Yeah I bought it today for £1050. He showed me how to service it myself and even gave me free touch up paint for that car and a spare distributer cap. I'm glad I bought it off someone I knew.

I was worried about the car VERY slowly edging towards the left on the road but I think it was just the road. He had tracking done on the car to keep me happy, nothing wrong at all (touch wood).

Thanks for this my partner has just had her renewed quote from tesco after 1 year she had not claimed but yet they only took off £10 from our 1st quote a year ago. have had a look at easy money and they can save her over £100 will also try nationwide ive heard they are very good to.
    thanks again

Hi greyster, it sounds like the very same car I learnt in back in 2003 as we are in the same area... of course he was an independant back then, I didn't realise he started working under the AA but that explains why I haven't seen him about in a while.

When I passed I wanted a Colt myself but ended up with a brand new Punto since it was cheaper and I wanted a new one to replace the Ford Fiesta run around I had (the manual choke and heavy handling compared to what I was used to was annoying me). Didn't have too much trouble with switching sides for the indicator like I thought I might.

    Congrats on your great deal!

hehe thats a surprising post. Our instructor may be making return to independentville. Apparently the AA franchise fee for instructors has just shot up. I hear the AA is floating on the market soon, perhaps that is why.

I learnt in brand new Ford Focus' and am finding the signal stick change a little confusing!!! It is a very nice car and I'm glad to be driving it.

How much did your punto cost?

23 isn't that young, my first years insureance when I was 17 was somewhere around £1200 and when I was 18 that shot down to £400 with just 1 year no clame :) And that was still on L plates.

I do find the checkers around here that price match really good and useful - hurra for Martin.

:-o Thanks for putting a dampener on my evening :P

It would seem you got a good deal then after one year. I hope it continues to fall at that rate each year :)

I was surprised to see that someone was buying a car that I recognised, after all I don't know of any other instructors in the area that were using a Colt, let alone a red R reg one! I agree, it was a nice car to drive which is probably why I didn't really like the heavyness of the Fiesta I had when I eventually was able to get behind the wheel of it...

My Punto 5,000,000 (special limited edition, numbered on the dash) cost me £6,695 brand new 1 month after passing my test... didn't qualify for the free insurance but got my policy changed from the Fiesta and just as well cos at 9 days old had someone shunt another parked car into the back of mine! I claimed on my insurance just to get things moving along as I wanted my car fixed ASAP and it wasn't drivable... fortunately it wasn't quite a write off - I would have been gutted as it only had 200 on the clock at the time.

omg ... thats bad. Did your car make a full recovery?

I looked into a new car + 0% + free insurance but didnt in the end. How come you didn't get the free insurance? Sounds bad to me.

Didn't get the free insurance because I had only just passed my test (needed a full licence for a year to qualify, it's in the smallprint of most of these types of offers)

Car is still going and will be 3 in July (had another shunt in Sept but that was light damage so claimed on the other parties insurance outright). I've not even done 9000 in it yet so keep insurance costs down by allowing myself about 4000 each year (on NU 9 month accelerator with equiv of 2 years NCD for £270). Don't know if I should keep it or get another new one, don't fancy putting it through an MOT if I'm considering a new one but the engine should be in good condition for it's age... decisions, decisions...
