My (at least) 32 year old gave up in a smokey mess on Sunday. I have British Gas coming to install a new boiler on Friday/Monday (Thanks British Gas for the speedy response!)

On Friday I had SSE confirm I was in credit with them after taking some meter readings. So that will cancel out the exit fees!

Looking forward to the move. Have all my eggs in one basket!

Q - Will I be offered Smart Meters straight away as Im switching to Collective December 2015 Dual Fuel?

Hi Garf, we're looking to install Smart Meter in all dual fuel BG homes by 2020 however the installation date will ultimately depend on the signal strength for these meters in your area/when we’ve engineer availability. It will be best to get in touch with us when your account’s all up & running & we can then see what we can do. Cheers, Jamie.
I am the official company representative of British Gas. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"

There's a section of the online account with BG where you can register your interest in smart meters. Not sure how reliable it is though. I answered the two questions with the answers British Gas would appear to want (access to meter and don't live in a flat) but was still told I wasn't eligible
  • Not the most helpful resolution after ending the address as requested here, basically told technical support would look at it but no idea how long it would take... Just checked & still no historic data. How hard can it be? All I've done is change tariff? I was an existing customer so why has my data gone?

  • I have just got off the phone to BG, as a BG customer already I thought I'd try and see if I could switch to this tariff with a phone call but no you have to go through the online application.

As I already pay variable direct debit based on how much I use each month, I was concerned the application process seemed to be indicating it would be a fixed monthly payment but I have been reassured by speaking to BG that if I'm already a customer then the only thing that will change due to this application is the tariff.
  • Yay, our switch from BG dual fuel standard (economy 7 elec) quarterly dd to BG Collective dual fuel (single rate elec) monthly dd has been accepted. It is going to save us over £1200 based on last years kWh consumption!! Actually it will be more as I'm now retired so the winter heating will be a higher consumption.

Yeh I can confirm that will be the case. I switched my mum who was on BG standard tariff and had the variable direct debit. All that has changed for her is the amount she pays per unit, how and when she pays has remained the same. BG call it 'EnergySmart'

Would you care to give some figures?

I overcame my reluctance to give address/phone details to join the Cheap Energy Club.(CEC)

On my consumption this much touted BG tariff was slightly more expensive than my present Scottish Power tariff and £129 more expensive than the cheapest.*

    * figures from the CEC themselves.
