Apple's site lists a headphone socket on the specs. Nobody would buy a device marketed as capable of playing videos if they could only listen via speakers.

As for flash, I'm hoping that this could help consign flash to history as it was never really designed to be part of HTML in the first place. It's a very inefficient way of delivering web video content which hopefully HTML5 will address.

Not sure who they are trying to target with this one. The only saving grace for it i reckon is the apps. if it didn't have apps what would be the point of it much the same as if the iPhone didn't have apps. Even then expect the apps on the Ipad to cost more and if you have them on the iPhone / iPod why would you spend more to have them on a second device?

The iPad has a headphone socket.
It can't multitask (which is one reason why I got rid of the Iphone...A HUGE REASON NOT TO BUY IT)

It can multitask, just like the iPhone. What it doesn't do is multitask with third party applications.
It doesn't have flash (so thats 70% of online videos you can't watch)

Really? I was under the impression that YouTube was by far the biggest purveyor of online videos, and it worked just fine with the iPad.
No USB (yes you can't even sit back and use a mouse with it- and before you say why would I it touch screen...then why have they brought out a external keyboard for it) You can't even use the new Magic mouse from Apple with it!!

It has a keyboard because entering large amounts of text on touch screen devices can be awkward. Pointing at things however, is not.
No SD card.....so I have to load my pics onto another LAPTOP to add them to my Ipad.....but apple say this replaces a laptop!!

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A
No Camera.....not a deal breaker for me....but why no webcam...those cheap notebooks have them.

Seems odd that it doesn't have a webcam.
No Video out...so once you've messed about on your laptop converting your movies to MPEG 4 to load onto your Ipad....you can't play it on your TV

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/IPAD_VGA_ADP?mco=MTc0MjU1OTU
no way to print documents over the network (yet you can do work on it)

You can print over a network with an iPhone or iPod Touch, so I fail to see why you couldn't with an iPad.
    small hard drive

It doesn't have a hard drive at all, it uses Flash Storage.
no way to connect a CD/DVD drive

    For doing what exactly?
It is in no way the best way to browse the web....my 22inch monitor on my PC or my 18inch screen on my laptop does it far better

Web browsing on the iPad is fantastic.
    The games are Cr*p

That explains why Apple are stealing a huge chunk of the portable gaming market from Nintendo and Sony.
if you already have a smartphone or a laptop....its a waste of money

So that's as far as your imagination goes when it comes to portable devices? If it's not a smartphone or laptop, then there's no value in it?
Its a typical Apple launch....just like the first Iphone.....full of hype yet doesn't deliver nothing new......MAYBE the next Ipad will be better but this one is a waste of money.

    Oh?

Where can I buy a device like the iPad?

People keep saying it's nothing new....where have all these other devices been hiding?
And before you start I have a MacBook Pro which I really enjoy.

Unfortunately, owning a MacBook Pro doesn't make you right.

Your objections can all be boiled down to "it's not a laptop".

Lots of things aren't laptops though. Just because it doesn't have every feature imaginable, it doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

    Remember Homer Simpson's car?

    homer-car.gif

That's what I think of every single time someone complains that the iPad doesn't do this or have that.

The iPad will be great for Social Networking and not much else and it is just a bigger version of the iPod Touch with a few little extras that make it a little bit better but not as productive as a laptop. In true Apple style prepare to be ripped off with an upgrade version in a years time with a webcam, just like they did with video capture on the iPhone. The app developers are proceeding with caution and pricing their apps 3 times more than it would cost for the iPod Touch / iPhone. I can't see what i would do with it that could sell my smartphone and laptop.

Arrrgh so the classic.....we'll make you buy everything you actually need good old Apple

It does NOTHING other than let you touch the screen that a CHEAPER netback cannot do....in fact it does LESS

You may watch youtube others don't and have a need for flash (its all because Apple fell out with Adobe years ago)

IT DOES NOT MULTITASK....IE i can't check my emails WHILE checking facebook....like pretty much every smartphone nowadays can do....so please don't say it can when it can't (ok you can play music while typing a letter...not really multitasking now is it.) considering 98% of the App store are third party kinda silly eh.

Me owning a macbook was showing I'm not a complete Apple hater.....I loved the Iphone but even on the third Gen of the phone it still couldn't multitask! play anything other than MPEG4 (why would I want MPEG 4 when most ripped movies are in AVI)

A flash drive is just another means of storing data...so does the same as a HD just more efficient...yet 64GB for a video/music/music/picture/office/portable gaming player is poor in this day and age.

I can't point at the device if its sat next to my TV being used to play my videos using the cable I had to buy.....hence why no mouse (either by bluetooth/USB is stupid...yet I can attach a keyboard)

So a camera connection kit....more money (still my cheap laptop/notebook already has this)

Why would I want to add a CD drive? well considering if you download from Itunes and you don't backup your music (because no matter how good people say Apple products are they still have problems and you still lose your stuff when you have to reset the device just like many Iphones)to something else you have to pay for them again(so its easier to backup to a CDR so I can play them in my car) remember this is suppose to stop me from wanting a laptop/netbook

Web browsing maybe fantastic but it can't beat a larger screen EVER.

And there are other devices...Itablet for one...HP have brought out another type of keyboardless laptop though I have not seen it for sale yet. and don't forget there are also tablet PC's out there that are touchscreen etc

Its got nothing to do with "its not a laptop" what I'm saying is it doesn't do what a laptop can do and more....
isn't that the whole point of new technology??
(even though its just a big ITouch...with 3G when that gets released)

As I said....it'll be better to wait for the next gen of the IPad.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

    The "Apple" tactic is to:

    1) Make their product expensive, but missing key attributes.
    2) Hype a product to market.
    3) Wait till they have the bulk of "fans" and general public owning one.
    4) Announce a next Gen version with SOME of the missing bits from the first won.
    5) Go To Step 2)
    6) Repeat steps 2-5 till market at saturation point
    7) Announce a totally new "revolutionary" "Game Changing" Product
    8) Goto step 1 and repeat....

and people fall for it every time...

    nail and head :D

i have no desire for a IMaxiPad, my iphone and netbook have all the bases covered 100 times better than the maxipad

my dopey sister has just bought one :o

and dont forget itunes is the biggest POS software ever written

I have spent 100s of hours "fixing" tags so that tracks play in order...........

and it suxs balls that you can not just connect the idevice via usb and copy the files on it like you can on every other device ....

As opposed to every other manufacturer, who supplies every accessory with all of their products?
It does NOTHING other than let you touch the screen that a CHEAPER netback cannot do....in fact it does LESS

It browses the web faster. It does emails better. It has a better screen and a longer battery life.

Using an iPad is a different experience from using a netbook.
You may watch youtube others don't and have a need for flash (its all because Apple fell out with Adobe years ago)

I think the awful performance of Flash, both on OS X and other mobile devices, has something to do with it.

It does multitask. When I'm browsing the web and listening to music, it tells me if I have a new email message. It gives me Facebook notifications no matter what else I'm doing.
Me owning a macbook was showing I'm not a complete Apple hater.....I loved the Iphone but even on the third Gen of the phone it still couldn't multitask! play anything other than MPEG4 (why would I want MPEG 4 when most ripped movies are in AVI)

Most purchased digital movies are in mp4 format. When you get a digital copy with a Blu-ray, it's in mp4 format. Apple don't really care about helping you play pirated movies on your iPad, and if you're ripping your own, I would advise switching to the superior h.264 mp4 format.
A flash drive is just another means of storing data...so does the same as a HD just more efficient...yet 64GB for a video/music/music/picture/office/portable gaming player is poor in this day and age.

What is the standard size for flash storage in this day and age?
I can't point at the device if its sat next to my TV being used to play my videos using the cable I had to buy

    Why on Earth not?
So a camera connection kit....more money (still my cheap laptop/notebook already has this)

And I'm sure your photos look just stunning on your cheap laptop's screen.

When you download something from iTunes on your iPad, it syncs back to your computer the next time you plug it in. A much more elegant solution than making the device an inch thicker and reducing the battery life by half so you can burn CDs on it.
Web browsing maybe fantastic but it can't beat a larger screen EVER.

    Yes it can.
and don't forget there are also tablet PC's out there that are touchscreen etc

And they all have one thing in common.

They're all absolutely awful to use.
Its got nothing to do with "its not a laptop" what I'm saying is it doesn't do what a laptop can do and more....
isn't that the whole point of new technology??[/B](even though its just a big ITouch...with 3G when that gets released)

But why does it have to do everything a laptop is supposed to do? It's not supposed to replace a laptop. Apple aren't suggesting you buy an iPad instead of a laptop. Apple think there's a market for a device between a smartphone and a laptop. Apple don't think the netbook is the answer, as the netbook is just a small underpowered laptop with cheap hardware and a terrible user experience.

    Hence, the iPad.

It's not intended to do everything a laptop can do, and no one is pretending it can do everything a laptop can do. So saying a laptop can do something and the iPad can't, despite being an interesting factoid I guess, isn't really saying anything at all.

I see the ipad and think "that would be amazing for use in hospitals'.. (but i guess i do work in hopsital IT). Put an MRSA resistant cover over it and you've got a perfect tool for doctors to carry around and use.

Shame the damn thing is locked down so much no major vendor will enterprise software for it (too expensive and the hardware manufacturer has a stranglehold on the OS and software market)
